What if IDW produced a new ARAH series based on the Hamaverse? Start by retelling ARAH #1 Operation: Lady Doomsday with no more than 13 well known Joes (perhaps a more diverse group than the Original 13) and a menacing (not bumbling) Cobra organization. Starting with issue #2, all of the stories are brand new, save for some important stories here and there (so maybe when #21 rolls around, retell that as well). Don’t ever bring in any new Joes (always keep it at 13), just new villains that are independent of Cobra. So maybe Zartan, Destro, and Major Bludd all exist in this universe, but instead they’re unaffiliated with Cobra so the Joes can have multiple adversaries. Hire a writer that will keep things fast-paced and fun (no political commentary). Maybe give Hama a Creative Consultant or Editor title to add credibility. Covers should correlate with the story inside (no pinup-style covers save for #1). And, lastly, I vote for Netho Diaz to draw the first 60 issues or so. ;)

So, kind of like the old 'Ultimate' Marvel Universe? I could go for that. Cherry pick the best of the best of the original run - and fill in the gaps with original stories.

Exactly. I gotta believe it would sell at least as well as the main ARAH title.
Characters can be re-imagined to some extent. New uniforms, etc. The 13 that came to my mind are: Hawk, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Stalker, Rock ‘n Roll, Duke, Roadblock, Gung Ho, Torpedo, Spirit, Wild Bill, Tunnel Rat, and Helix. I was inspired in part by my memory of the ill-fated Benchpress Comics reboot which included 13 as well: Hawk, Snake Eyes, Stalker, Roadblock, Torpedo, Spirit, Wild Bill, Tunnel Rat, Lady Jaye, Cover Girl, Dodger, Ripcord, and Flint. I'm not sure if I would go so far as to change anyone's ethnicity or gender since there's plenty of diversity in the roster to choose from, but perhaps Helix could be black or Hispanic since she's relatively new to the Hamaverse. Perhaps Shooter changed her name to Helix... |

You honestly think IDW has the chops to pull this off? When's the last time they made even a decent G.I.Joe comic?
I don't see the benefits of mining soon 40-year old storylines.

Starting with Reloaded, just about ever reboot I've ever seen of Joe hasn't been as good as the original. I'd probably get it because I get almost every Joe comic, but I personally would rather see a spin off of ARAH (like Special Missions) or a Sunbow season 3 comic over another reboot.

@deadman: None of the "new takes" have ever reached any level of long term success, though it remains to be seen if Liefeld will do more with Snake Eyes beyond Deadgame.
@Woundwort: Think of it as a spinoff in an alternate universe. What I'm proposing isn't exactly a *new* take but it is a *fresh* take on ARAH. I'm only suggesting that the first issue is retold for the purpose of firmly establishing it in an alternate ARAH universe and after that it would be all-new stories that would ultimately go in a different direction than where Hama went. Hopefully that makes sense. @nero: I do think IDW could pull it off provided they hire the right writer that can keep the momentum going and not get bogged down in old story lines or pages upon pages of set up with no payoff. We don't need Springfield, Dr. Mindbender, the Brainwave Scanner, etc. anymore. New ideas only starting with issue #2. |

Meh I love ARAH to death but a big part of that is Larry Hama's writing and take on the characters, (even with all the faults and quirks of which there are many). Plus he seems to have an affinity for a lot of the same characters I do.
I mean if Larry wants to retire and they choose to continue the series I will still follow it religiously. I just hope that whomever takes over doesn't forget the OG13.

I feel like anyone that wants to read the old stories will find them. 80s nostalgia has been big for a long time, so I doubt anything (other than availability, as trades go in and out of print) would keep an interested reader away. I would read a reboot if it had a great writer on it that wanted to show their personal vision, like if Garth Ennis was allowed to do a finite series.
I don't read the current IDW iteration (I mean the new one; I buy ARAH). I bought the first couple but had lost interest after the Sitterson debacle. I wish they would do Sunbow Season 3 just for fun, but the whole lasers-and-no-death issue would be a bit odd for me. |
