I don't know how many Hamaverse characters there are, but I think the only possible way to get them all into a ten issue arc is for most of them to only be seen in the background. I would be completely fine if the team was pared back to those that appeared in first ~50 issues. Introduce new bad guys, but keep the good guys a small team.
In the original run we were kids, so I don't think the writing has changed all that much *but* I do agree that fresh ideas and well thought out stories would be welcome. on edit, that doesn't mean necessarily they were always the best plots. Some of the really great stories came later.

I dunno. The lens of seeing it through the eyes of myself as a child just doesn’t wash for me. I can still read those older books and be amazed. This series turned to drivel effective issue 160. I can’t name a single memorable thing in a good way. I still read it, and will until the end, but this series does need actual direction. With no new toys being released everyone just exists in a standstill.

The writing now is objectively worse than it was in the 80s, no question. A good point of comparison is the original Springfield story. Like this one, it featured most of the team doing nothing but being part of a roll call. The difference was that story took two issues, and it took the Joe team two pages to get to their destination, not two issues. This epic story has literally already had 6 issues of the Joes going "yeah, let's do this!", and it will be an issue at most of them actually doing it.
I'm all for thinking outside the box, but when a story has the hero already having defeated the villains with 3 issues left, it has absolutely failed in the basics of storytelling. We needed 6 issues for the Joes to get off their ass and finish their field trip, but the reader already knows they needn't have bothered. In the original Springfield issues we actually had Snake-Eyes running away from Cobra, like it was trying to be a legitimate dramatic story or something. We had Joes get wounded to make the stakes seem real. Now Cobra Commander gets his knee capped, making him unable to ever walk normally again, and he treats it like a stubbed toe. No need to even get into objective signs of incompetence like accidentally resurrected characters. Even 10-yo me hated the stories where SNAKE-EYES mowed down some level 1 Goombas in cheat mode.

When I first heard that this storyline would feature every Joe, I was pretty excited, especially since I think the series hasn't been that great since we saw that giant eyeball in the Pit in issue 200. I was expecting something like "Pyramids of Darkness" or "Arise Serpentor Arise", at least as far as character usage goes. Instead we get all the Joes riding a bus. 3 issues later they're still on it. Also, the plot of putting Snake Eyes in the brainwave scanner and turning him into a Cobra was done in the 160's and was called Dark Snake Eyes. It's been about 10 years since I read it, but I remember it had a lot of buildup for an ending where nothing happened. Also, Snake Eyes kills every Cobra and lets Cobra Commander live again? That would be like Seal Team 6 going to Abbottabad in 2011 and leaving Osama bin Laden alive.

I'm looking forward to Untold Tales starting w/ #276. That issue is drawn by Netho Diaz. The next issue will be drawn by Brian Shearer, whose art I really like, but it feels too cartoonish for ARAH. I wish IDW would just stick with Diaz for the long haul.

Yes, if Untold Tales are anything like his recent stab at Special Missions, we’ll be back to some good reading!

I would love for Untold Tales to have the pacing of the early issues.

Another frustrating thing about the BUSES is that the Joes already have their own "bus", the APC. They could've included the original version, plus a few of the re-paints or conventions exclusives of that vehicle. Would've been some decent fan-service and would not have made the team appear like a buncha' geeks.
Although, to be fair, the Avengers did show up for their famous battle against Michael Korvac on a bus.

Hey guys! Tks for the support, stopdead. the #274 is action packed! No bus talking. And #275 is crazy! But I can’t talk about that. (Im not on it also.)
#276 is like special missions, but in a small group scale instead on focus on one character. Jagdish returns to inks on this full issue. I have no clue for next issues. but i know im not on any or them. |
