Gotcha. I get it now. These side series of Gi joe have killed off main characters before in some of their best stories (chuckles, cobra commander) and it felt like a solid way to show this is a new chapter. The Hama story continues, too, so lots of duke there, though he has taken a back seat for over a decade now..

I don't mind. You may need to consider some citations though. Enclosed is an analysis on SJW tropes.
https://mattwilson32.wordpress.com/2...1/#comment-786 Frankly, there are some things I liked about the issue, but overall it seems like Mr. Allor is just checking off a list of requirements: 1. Kill off the alpha white guy. Check 2. Put an underprivileged hero replacement, Tiger. Check 3. Make the new lead gay, check It's formulaic and a tad bit lazy and uncreative. In my opinion. What's worse is, he seems to know that he's pulling the gay card and hints about it at Yo, Joe! Paul Allor On His New Era of the Real American Heroes – Multiversity Comics Correction: https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/20...-comic-reboot/ At the end of the day, it just doesn't have the integrity that I grew up with, starting in 1983 when I bought my first joe with grass mowing money. GI Joe has always been a strong franchise about representation with different ethnicity, strong female leads, and it's great that they are now open to finally being open to sexual orientation. I guess they are going for a vague near future setting? You have sorta modern looking stuff but also slightly futuristic. I wonder if they will ever state a year that this story takes place or just leave it vague fictional setting.

Other studies say it’s only 1.6 percent. Either way they’re not a “huge” percent of our population, they are just very vocal. |

What ethnicity and sexual orientation would you have preferred?

I just don’t like how Duke died right off the bat.

I should have addresses the ethnicity/sexual orientation question to Blackacre. My bad!
As for being mad that they kill Duke — I totally can appreciate that. I personally don’t have an attachment to him, but I’d be bummed if it happened to someone I think of as essential to the team. For a while it has felt like writers don’t know what to do with Duke. Scarlett has been in charge for a while now in many iterations of joe. They put Hawk in the older general role, so Duke is the odd man out. Is he black ops? More political? A front man? A new idealistic recruit? I thought Renegades handled him well, but the movies not so much (hey, they even killed him in the sequel similar to this). Snake Eyes dying has felt like a big loss in the main series because he felt so so iconic and unique. I even am a fan of Dawn, but really miss Snake Eyes. I’d be upset if Scarlett died, and was pretty angry when Devils Due killed Jaye. On the flip side, I think idw handled the death of cobra commander pretty spectacularly. That was a moment that really paid off due to the set up and follow through. For Blackacre’s original post: I think there is a lot of overlap in your list with common story tropes. A ton of classics begin with a seamingly unstoppable hero being killed forcing the young, reckless, new recruit who comes from modest upbringing to take over. Think Star Wars! Transformers cartoon movie! Lion king! The only real variable I see is that the new recruit is gay and Cambodian-American. There are tons of dark skinned joes already (Roadblock was the hero in the second movie), so I’m not really sure how this changes anything. I’m genuinely asking what race and sexual orientation would have been preferable? |

You've hit the nail on the head.
