Pure set up, but I think the 10 issue arc is off to a good start. Fun to see some sparring in The Pit and Cobra Commander's "sycophantic lickspittle" comment cracked me up. Lots of cool cameos, living up to the "every character" promise.
This was also my first exposure to Robert Atkins. Admittedly I wasn't super excited to see Netho Diaz go (he'll be back for every other issue starting with #268) but I was pleasantly surprised with Atkins. His work reminds me a bit of Rod Whigham--I have a soft spot for that guy as he was drawing ARAH when I first started collecting--I compared every artist that came after him to that standard. Nothing against J. Brown at all, but the Digital Ashcan feature made me wonder what ARAH might look like with a different colorist. Maybe I should just be grateful for what we have! Looking forward to #267! Last edited by stopdead; 08-28-2019 at 06:21 PM.. |

Love Atkins art, and the dialogue feels like it's Hama directly talking to the fans and how the whole two Snake Eyes thing is a mess. So hopefully means this story line is gonna straighten things out in some manner.
Not a fan that they really didn't resolve the Revanche storyline in the last story series, as it felt like a series that went nowhere and is still left unresolved. |

Hate to say it... but unless they bring back the actual Snake-Eyes, I'm just not about this. It's become... a bit much. I know that's an odd statement to make, regarding GI Joe, but it just feels 'wild for the sake of wild,' and thus, empty?

Exactly! As great at Diaz' art is... this issue was outstanding. Really brought back that classic Whigman-era ARAH feeling. Even the story and setup and pacing. Come on, Larry - knock this story out of the park!

I have been a fan of Atkins since seeing his art on a number of Chuck Dixon's Joe stories. I like his commando type look for Throw down. Glad to have him back.
I agree with some of the above comments that the whole Throwdown/Snake Eyes, Dawn/Snake Eyes thing is a mess, and I also want the true Snake Eyes back. Even though the comic media lauded the creation of a female Snake Eyes, I wonder how many of them actually read the comuc on a regular basis. As for Throw down, this issue seems to be setting him up to have skills, approaching that of Snake Eyes. But if Throwdown is mute, has a scarred face, and equal skills, what was the point of killing off Snake Eyes in the first place? |

One disappointment down, nine more to go. Story progressing at an absolute snail's pace. This is Cobra World Order all over again. Zero interesting character appearances, but we did get the usual assortment of robots, ninjas and smartass side characters. And we finally found out what a badass FAKE-EYES is! Fake-Eyes -ception. Cobra talking about Joe talking about how badass Fake-Eyes is.
OK, we did get a couple of cameos from cool army builders. It would help if they actually got to do something, though. Who's the third guy with Hiss Driver and Toxo-Viper? I can see how this is going to end up. Eight issues of Cobra talking about what they're going to do, like that scene in Life of Brian. And then two issues of Fake-Eyes and Fake-Eyes kicking robot ass. Subtle sexism: Fake-Eyes kicks girl ass, and Cobra says he's never looked this impressive. Whoops! Also, Bombstrike is a ninja now. Of course. I agree Atkins looks pretty good here. A nice, crisp cartoony style is just what a Joe comic needs. There are a couple of gaffs, though. Helix jumping at the reader looks very poorly proportioned, like bad fan art. Cobra chick looks like she's ready to burst into tears (with good reason, I assume), and the other Cobras look like they belong in a boy band. Did Snake-Eyes kill all the adult Cobras? LOL at Tom Waltz marking out over a friggin' papergirl. When you're really trying to come up with something to get excited about... Quote:

I'll have to go back to the page in the Hama-verse thread with #21 on it and see if Nero has anything complimentary to say about it. If I took a drink every time he complained or nitpicked about something in the run I'd have inoperable liver cancer by now.

The Mindbender and CC dialogue is repeated every other issue, ad nauseum. Hama has had CC say the exact same thing to Mindbender countless times. CC couldn’t be more of a one-dimensional character; long-forgotten is his early Marvel character development.
