Discuss! Neither universe isn't a valid answer for this exercise. ;)
It would be hard to put Joes side by side with the likes of the X-Men, but I could see them working with Tony Stark and Shield. Likewise I could see Snake Eyes teaming up with Batman and kicking some butt... |

Honestly "Neither" is really the best answer here. Cobra would be a joke in either universe without some serious upgrades (Iron Man could probably solo all of Cobra by himself). GI Joe wouldn't be particularly useful for about 95% of the real threats out there unless you made them cops and had them go after street level criminals/villains.
That said, on the whole the Marvel Universe would fit the tone and characters of GI Joe more readily than DC. Not likely too surprising given that Marvel published the comics for years so for many fans GI Joe was already "Marvel style" anyway in terms of characterization and storytelling. Also on average the Marvel Universe isn't quite as "godlike" as the DC Universe in terms of power levels. Basically if GI Joe were in either universe their stories would have to get confined to their little corner of the Universe where they fight Cobra and similar and occasionally some other character from the comics might guest-star. |

"Would G.I. Joe fit better in the DC or Marvel Universe?"
While I would agree that "neither" is the best answer, we have already seen it appear in both, from a historic point of view. When Hasbro was creating the product in the 1960's, they were only using G.I. Joe as the place holder until they could figure out what to call it. Eventually, they decided to actually use G.I. Joe for the name because other that a comic book, it wasn't being trademarked for anything else. In the 1970's, Hasbro tried to grab a lapsed trademark and create Bulletman, the human bullet. Within a year, they backed off, rather than face the legal challenges which they probably would have lost to the comic company. In the Marvel comics run, Storm Shadow was thought to be Moon Knight by a child, and the Daily Bugle is sold at New York City newsstands. I prefer the way that it has become it's own universe, independent of DC and Marvel.

I always thought GI Joe already was a part of the Marvel Universe. I know Spider-man made an early appearance in the Transformers comic and they've established that they are in the same world as GI Joe.

As a child I always assumed Joe was part of the Marvel Universe and acted accordingly. I figured they just operated in their own little corner of the world. It’s not like Marvel had many other strictly military characters operating in the present time. Cobra, especially if you read the ARAH comics.... well they don’t have the sort of world threatening schemes that would cause the Avengers to swoop in and destroy them. Cobra’s plans are actually pretty modest. So while SHIELD is busy worrying about aliens and super villains, Cobra is just tasked to the regular military. Later I decided that that’s why the Joes have such wonky equipment and vehicles... maybe SHIELD has such a huge budget that Joe has to make do.

-First off, the Joes are not (and never have been) in the "Marvel U" or "Marvel-616"-- the main reality that has the Avengers, FF, X-men, Brother Voodoo, etc. -Spider-Man appeared in Transformers #3 in 1984. That has been explained by TF fans as "the Spider-Man of the Transformers' world". An alternate version and NOT the "real" Spider-Man of Marvel-616. -Transformers villains Circuit Breaker appeared in the Marvel-616 series "Secret Wars II" in 1985. However, she only appeared to the Beyonder. Easy to figure that the limitless power of the Beyonder allowed him to peak into the Transformers reality and talk with Circuit Breaker. -"GI Joe vs. Transfomers" mini-series in 1986. This is where it gets tough. You can explain this as "The Joes of the Transformers world" and not the "Hama-verse" Joes-- although they are identical. For years, Hama maintained that this series was "not in my continuity". -The Transformers then appeared in the "Hama-verse" in 1993; totally negating Hama's claim. You can explain these as the Transformers of the "Hama-verse" and not the "main" Transformers reality. BUT...there was a vague reference to the Joes and Autobots knowing each other from the past. You can explain that there was a previous encounter, that all happened "off-screen". SO... final scorecard gives us 3 separate worlds/realities. MARVEL-616 Reality: -Spider-Man and countless heroes -No Transformers -No GI Joe Transformers Reality (Transformers Marvel series): -Spider-Man -GI Joe...but not the "Hama-verse" Joes. GI Joe Reality ("Hama-verse") -No Spider-Man -Transformers.. but not the "Transformers Reality", above. Any inconsistencies with the Transformers-- since they're robots who fly around space, you can whip up some explanation that they accidentally crossed over into another reality, temporarily. Or else you say that something like Tom Fagan's old Halloween Parties happened; allowing for unofficial crossovers between DC, Marvel and (occasionally) somebody else. I'm also excluding the appearance of "Guy Who Looked Just Like Duke" in a Marvel-616 Spider-Man story in 1985. That was just a cute unofficial crossover. There's a military guy who looks like Duke in Marvel-616... but he's not "our" Duke.

Just here for the comments.
I agree with the sentiment that "neither" si the correct answer but Marvel is more likely of the 2. |

Do you remember when J. Jonah Jameson meets Storm Shadow, issue #95 of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (December 1989) by Marvel Comics?

Soooo... No-Prize explanation: "This is not the Marvel-616 JJJ, but the Hama-verse version of him. There's also a Daily Bugle in this reality".

Yes. Although he did not "meet" Storm Shadow. A guy that looked like JJJ was walking by a newsstand and complained that the Daily Bugle wasn't on sale. He was not addressed as JJJ or named, but it was obviously intended to be him.
Soooo... No-Prize explanation: "This is not the Marvel-616 JJJ, but the Hama-verse version of him. There's also a Daily Bugle in this reality". By definition, to "meet" is to come into the presence of someone by chance or arrangement. Jameson did come into the presence of Storm Shadow, and was touched by him and yelled at by him. They met. I suspect that Marvel was just having fun with us readers, teasing that G.I. Joe might share the Marvel Universe with other comic favorites, even though I agree with you that they do not share the same universe, for legal/trademark reasons between Hasbro and Marvel at that time period. Was it the Ghostbusters that taught us it was best not to cross the streams?
