I personally just don't usually feel it's justified either way, especially in a franchise like this, which already has strong characters from almost every walk of life. If they really want to level up their inclusivity points, they'd add a disabled Joe to the ranks.
All race swapping does is exacerbate the issue, as it only serves to deepen the rift.

Race-swap aside (and no, not a big fan, for the same reasons already mentioned), this was another decent story. Perfect? No...but decent.
Sorry, not sorry—this shill enjoyed it!

We can't mention race when talking about race-swapping? There has never been a legitimate reason to race-swap a character ever, and both G.I.Joe and Nick Fury are perfect examples of this. They could have used Gabe Jones or G.W. Bridge for Ultimates if they wanted a black SHIELD leader, but then the creator couldn't have milked butt-pats for himself with his patronizing "look, I made a black!" style of hackwork.
Yeah, like maybe the writer could create a blind or mute or one-legged ninja character? |

You missed the point, I believe. G.I. JOE has never been about race, because it's always had a diverse group of ethnic characters since its inception in 1964. But today, by swapping whites with blacks, no matter how well intentioned, you automatically bring the subject of race up, when it's not needed.
Now Marvel, on the other hand, did not begin with many black characters in 1963 (at least not solo titles). The "new" Nick Fury was an excellent and interesting change solidified by the quality representation of a well established actor. Last edited by Megastar; 02-13-2020 at 09:23 PM.. |

I just can't get into anyone who calls himself "ya boi". Little too Avril Levigne for me I guess.

It should be noted that this was very consistent with the general population demographic of the times (in the military). |

Understood but I think it’s either a bad attempt at sarcasm or a hail back to a coinage from a time when comics were better. It’s just a name.

Like, sure, I like seeing the rabid chuds round here get wound up as next as the next guy but GI Joe really is one of those franchises that never lacked in this department so constantly messing with characters established for several decades just seems weird and unnecessary. Doc, Stalker, Roadblock, Airborne, Spirit, Torpedo, Zap, Clutch, Scarlett, Storm Shadow, Cover Girl, Quick Kick, Alpine, Iceberg, Jinx, Tunnel Rat, Red Dog and no doubt others I've forgotten. There's a wide range of skills right there, so use them! Give them the spotlight for a change instead of just giving the same old names a needless new look. Like, here was a great opportunity to use a newer character like Shooter but nope, lets mess about with Cover Girl instead because [reasons]. Anyway, while not as good as the previous Bludd-centric issue, I dug this weird trip into Dreadnok World. Too bad Jinx may be left thinking it would have been better to let Buzzer kill himself, though. |

Well, I have to disagree. The original 1982 lineup had an African-American (Stalker), a Hispanic (Zap) and a Jew (Clutch). The 1983 lineup added a Native American (Airborne), a Native Hawaiian (Torpedo) and another African-American (Doc). Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Can't speak for the cartoon because I never watched it but just looking at the characters available in just the first few years, it was easily as diverse a franchise as there's ever been, folks of numerous races and creeds from all walks of life all over the world. Focusing on the inadaquacies of the cartoon cast is rather disingenuous, especially when Hama's comic series is the one that the vast majority of fans care about.

Think of it like this, let's say traditional Batman travels to another universe and meets his counterpart over there who just happens to be Jewish or gay, it's the same freaking thing here. I feel like my biggest freaking problem with this entire conversation is we've been through this before with the casting of an Asian Snake-Eyes or with the previous GI Joe run. White characters can be changed either their gender or sexual orientation or race, why because usually the character that gets changed really isn't that freaking unique and the reason why the POC are left untouched is because there's not that many of them in there, with everyone Roadblock there are like a hundred Dukes! |

and once again you all are missing the freaking point the versions of these characters in this comic are not meant to be the ones from the cartoon or previous comics it's not like they were all white and then suddenly change to a POC, this is the first time we are meeting this Zartan who has no connection with Cobra and isn't a shape-shifter or master of disguise, but is a survivalist in charge of a biker militia. It isn't about using obscure characters or making new ones, it's about showing the differences from previous Joe comics.
