For the longest time we have been asking for a “Yearbok”. We finally get one. But what makes it a Yearbook?
The Marvel Yearbooks contained a full length story, a cover gallery of the years comic covers, an article about the latest and greatest in the cartoon series, a back-up story, and a memo from Hawk. Granted there isn’t a cartoon series to plug, but there could of been an article about the state of the Snake-Eyes movie. We got our full length story and back up story (which by the way leads to something that isn’t advertised anywhere), but a cover gallery would of been nice as well as the memo from Hawk. I dunno. They just don’t make em like they used to. |

I was gratified to see that this came in right behind the events of Destro attacking the Blue Ninjas. It felt like the self-sacrificing Blue Ninja furthered the narrative of that faction a lot, but we're pretty far past them being an expression of transhumanism into a less interesting exploration of AI and androids. I honestly am not interested in too much of this, so while the Storm Shadow android interested me, these ones are less so. Again, the idea of a robot studying the ninjas and learning from them was quite top notch but the variations on the robots angle was dull.
I am glad to be reading about Tommy in the water tower and to see Jinx back. I felt like we got a real strong understanding of the geography of the ninja world of NY in this issue. Also glad to get confirmation that Dawn will be stationed in Staten Island, although that is pretty obvious. That one page of the meditation made me just want to not turn the page. I am 0% interested in anything having to do with the cartoon. Good luck with that, but I want my 4 pages back, that was awful. The art was really good, and I woukd welcome the illustrator on the main title, but the concept remains as much of a nonstarter for me now as it was when I was a kid.

The Blue Ninjas are not the same conceptually as when they appeared. They used to be humans who had embraced transhumanism and began artificially evolving. Now they're robots, AIs, and mechs. Apparently Transformers also.

Is this the first appearance of Raymond in the IDW half of the series? I'm fond of Tyrone but I don't remember Raymond or the circumstances of Budo training him at all. Thanks for this fast reminder.

Not his first appearance. Just first appearance in about 5 years.

I really enjoyed the art. I wasn’t a big fan of Zama on Optimus Prime, but felt she really shines here.
And besides, who can resist Hama/Zama? |

Raymond's first appearance was in issue 203. He shows up at Budo's dojo in San Francisco and asks to be trained.

You're welcome. Started doing the recaps in 2007 when the "25th Anniversary" relaunch was all the rage. Also, at the the time, I had just met Sgt. Slaughter and he put me in the Cobra Clutch. I smiled for a month and channeled my enthusiasm to do the issue-by-issue thing.
