Surprised that Hama included Tyrone on the list, but omitted Captain Minh. He seemed to be big on Capt. Minh in the late 80's. I'm okay with Minh's omissions, because he didn't seem like a relevant character.
For issue 253: it looked like the "other" soldier, Terry Chiang, survived. Is that accurate? I like the fact that Duke and Roadblock have a long history together. This was somewhat similar to a "Hasbro Comic" from about 10 years ago that had Duke & Roadblock meeting the Crimson Twins in Trucial Abysmia. Issue 253 was much better, however.

This was a meh issue. Duke is still the same boring, flat character he always was. Hennesey an awful stereotype (save for the gender role reversal, smh) and a cliche ending that even Duke and Roadblock had to smirk about. The Stalker issue was pretty good, the Baroness ok, this issue another notch down, not really looking forward to the Destro episode. You know who I'd like to know more about? Characters like Darklon and Lowlight. Characters who have not been done to death.

"The List" mentions General Flagg as having died in issue #16. It was actually in #19.
Dr. Venom is listed as dead but the newest solicits reveal Venom as the focus of the next arc. Also, Dr. Venom took over Dr. Mindbender's cloned body, so does this make Mindy dead again? |

I just read it and was disappointed on several levels.
A bit of fact checking would have avoided the basic inaccuracies regarding the air support (first described as "Su-7 Frogfoot" - the Su-7 Fitter and the Su-25 Frogfoot are two separate planes; but which finally reveal themselves to be a-4 Skyhawks.) On a bigger level, the story doesn't fit into the mold developed in ARAH in general (and most recently the Stalker story) because the pre G.I.Joe background to this one was more recent Middle East rather than Vietnam. At the end the whole thing is sort of tied to a later time right before the formation of the Joe team, but this feels forced. There's a fierce, largely realistic firefight which I largely appreciate, but Hama is at his best when he's showing a little more moral complexity - the really classic Special Mission stories were ones that showed the good guys struggle with themselves a little, and highlighted the Joes' antagonists as competent soldiers and often admirable in their own ways. I'll be honest and say I'm not enjoying this new "Special Missions" run as much as I had hoped - they are focusing on individual characters more than on than teams. The Baroness one has been the best of the batch so far - and that isn't something I had expected. |

I realize this is nitpicky, but it's just a bit of fun with continuity.
For my chronology/reading order, do we feel like #253 would sit right before issue #1 of ARAH or before Duke and Roadblock show up in issue #22? The first part ostensibly takes place before the formation of the Joe team. However, we see that Duke and Roadblock are stationed at Ranger School in G.I. Joe: Classified (Short-Fuse's origin). Duke is also ostensibly not a First Sergeant at that point, because he refers to the other soldier as First Sergeant. The unit wouldn't have two, although Duke could have been a Master Sergeant; more likely, he was the unit's Staff Sergeant, and the First Sergeant was saying "Deal with this guy." However, he is a "Top" in the flashback of #253, meaning that it was after Short-Fuse's story. Then, after an indeterminate period of time, he tells Hennesy's brother at the pub about his sister's death in Trucial Abysmia, before concluding with a remark about joining the unit in Staten Island (if he can take Roadblock with him). So, Duke may have waited a very long time to tell Hennesy's brother about her death. In the intervening period, the G.I. Joe team was formed and he was assigned there. Thus, the events of the issue are split between before and after Classified. Then, issues #1-21 happen, and Duke and Roadblock show up at General Flagg's funeral to report in. Alternately, the first part is just an in-story flashback and #253 sits before #22. Thoughts? JJames? |

I place #253 after issue #20 and before #21 for a couple of reasons:
1. #253 gives a backstory/introduction to Duke and Roadblock which gives some context to their debut in #22. 2. #253 is a standalone story so I want it to follow another standalone story, Clutch's story in #20. I don't like breaking up story arcs with standalone stories. |
