This seems like real easy money, especially considering the long tail of reprints and digital, but why is there not/has not been a Sunbow style GI Joe Adventures comic book? Something for the kids that doesn't require 35 years of backstory understanding or be too mature? A floppy you could hand to a 5-6 year old after they have seen a few Sunbow episodes and not worry about them being exposed to various adult perspectives that IDW has inflicted upon the brand.
This seems like low hanging fruit. The style guides are there, continuity is there, brand recognition is there, the dvds are still in print, Gen X-ers have kids. Heck, one could even lightbox most/all of the art and be just peachy. It all fits together. Am I on crazy juice? My former status as a honest for real comic assistant artist says yes. But, my MBA says otherwise. In addition, with a little creativity, Hasbro could very much leverage their 35 years of art assets onto any number of apps. Where is my coloring book app? Choose your own adventures books apps? Joe Soundboard? Cobra Ringtones? POD clothing line? And on and on. Last edited by Bubbavader; 03-09-2018 at 04:00 AM.. |

The floppy you hand to a 5-6 year old Sunbow kid is an old Marvel issue. Doubt there's a large enough kid audience for a vintage cartoon, so it would have to be directed at adults. And they prefer reading about spilled guts and exploding brains.

IDW could take a note from this suggestion and your Renagades suggestion. Instead they gave us gay Marines and Army Ants.

They did also recently launch Star Wars Adventures (which seems to be selling fairly well). As far as Joes, the more direct ties to the golden age the greater the chance of gold. Either way, it statistically can’t do worse than SSF!

This is a great suggestion. Listen up, IDW!

I've wanted this since I first cracked open the Joe TPB Marvel put out back when the property relaunched back in 2001. My Joe memories where of the Sunbow toon and when I opened the book it was a serious WTF moment and I was not happy. Dont get me wrong. I love the old comics now, but it was jarring to my sheltered college self. I would buy the heck out of some Sunbow continuity Joe. Transformers too. Then cross them over directly. Marissa Fairborne and Old Snake, etc. There's your Hasbroverse or whatever IDW is trying.

I'd love to see a more all-ages G.I. Joe book, but I'm not sure it would necessarily need to be Sunbow-based. After all, kids don't really care about G.I. Joe anyways, they're gonna care about a 35 year old cartoon even less. Maybe if the Bumblebee graphic novel does well, IDW will try more all-ages graphic novels.
You say that like its a bad thing. Last edited by Daniel Adkins; 03-10-2018 at 12:05 AM.. |

Buzz Dixon and some of the other show writers are still out there and Buzz recently wrote a Joe story as well. Why not give him a call? Ideally such a book would be old school American style compressed comics. No need for Bendis decompression thank you very much, write for the episode/issue with maybe a slight background overarching storyline.
This would be a media/old fan/new kid win across the board. It could start after Season 1 or before the Movie. Heck, print it in color one month, then again a month later as line art on newsprint as a coloring book! If Hasbro can reuse molds, then why not repurpose art?!! |

Turning the two biggest blue oyster rejects into a couple and putting one of them on a Tom of Finland orgy cover are progressive moves?

Going for all ages isn't going to work without a big media property to push it. Right now GI Joe has nothing going on that appeals to kids, so they wont have any interest in this. This type of stuff needs to be done when there is current main stream media, like a big new movie, cartoon series, etc. Just plopping out an all ages GI Joe comic out of the blue is going to sell like crap
