From the Aubrey Sitterson on 9/11 thread:
Quote:
My goal and dream as a fan has been met. It wasn't Hama that made this happen. It was Aubrey Sitterson. I am so grateful for it. While I don't agree with Sitterson's comments on 9/11, I can tell you, in emails, he's been nothing but well-presented and kind. So this upheaval saddens and worries me. Will everyone from Hasbro to the fans disregard this development for Zandar & Zarana?

There's something gloriously beautiful about a character who consistently pursues his/her clearly defined want, despite all obstacles, no matter what goes on around them, never changing, no matter how circumstances change.
Aubrey and IDW should take a note. D Twins, I salute you! |

Nope. It's canon forever now in the Hasbro-verse. And Rock 'n Roll becoming a Fatal Fluffy? Yep, that's canon, too. And I'm okay with it!

We they originally not twins? That's how I always had them in my mind.

yea me too....i didn't have a comic shop around me when i was a kid so all i had were the cartoons and toys. ever since i was a kid i always thought they were the younger twins to zartan. i dunno where it got in my head but i was always under the impression they were twins. i had no idea there were people pushing for this to be a thing since i always assumed it was.
oh well...it's a thing now....and finally as far as i can tell. And now, they share a "twins language." I love it! |

I think we all have to assume that Hasbro intended this from the inception of the two action figures. Both had flaming orange hair (Zarana's was only pink in the comics); matching shoulder pads (yeah, I know Zartan had these, too); and he wore a pink scarf that was torn from her shirt. No tough "Mad Max"-type outlaw would do this unless there was some serious connection.
And now, they share a "twins language." I love it! They were always intended to be twins, from what I've been told and what I've been able to discover. It was Larry Hama who decided he didn't want anything to do with it--presumably because he thought Zandar was "laughable." Not very nice, and not very professional. :/ I agree about the scarf! Some deep connection there. And even in the Marvel comics, they shared pink hair, the same hairstyle, and even looked remarkably alike. Curiously, on Hama's part, while they were never outright stated to be twins, they sure seemed like it the way they were written--notice how in #51, Zarana doesn't ask Zandar if he'll operate the elevator controls, she just says to Zartan, "Zandar will operate the controls"--as if she's very, very accustomed to relying on him, which implies they're very used to each other. All of the above implies how close they are. It's only that Hama won't have anything to do with it. Which raises the question....would Mr. Hama have anything to do with it now? He still refuses to write Zandar for some reason. And I'm dismayed that only the "cool kids" in the Hamaverse get to be a twin. (Tomax, Xamot, Snake Eyes and Terri.) Why can't Zarana have a "loser" for a twin brother that she takes for granted? Another question is raised... This is my absolute dream as a fan. Fulfilled by IDW and Hasbro in the Hasbroverse. Would Hama actually undo it? If he ever says they're not twins anywhere, and since what he says is the core canon....would that destroy what I've worked so hard to accomplish, and make it a "lesser canon" that nobody follows? I hope in this one instance he changes his mind. Or that Hasbro and the fans go with Zandar & Zarana as twins anyway. As it stands, I'm delighted by what IDW has established!!

I had never heard that about Hama and Zandar, but it makes sense since he doesn't get too much use.
Zandar has always been one of my faves - must have been from however I used the figure while growing up

Where does this idea that Zandar's scarf is a ripped off piece of Zarana's shirt originate from?
I don't remember that at all from the 80s. |
