issue 239
Dawn's bus gets pulled over on the way into Springfield. Is this the police roadblock set up to catch Heather? The Springfield SWAT would have made a GREAT army builder back in the 80s. Dawn gets picked up by a total creeper. So you know it's going to end badly for him. Dawn then takes out a Cobra Policewoman to use her uniform for infiltration. The Darklonia team recons a Revanche facility guarded by Vipers. They attack a shipment out of the facility. One brief firefight later and the Joes are stealing a crate (confiscating?) and Sneak-Peak has been "hit pretty badly." Wow that was faster than I remember. Some Cobra Rages are always cool, Roadblock, Spirit, and Grosz stay behind to slow them down. Grosz says "it's a good day to die" and Sneak Peak apparently agrees. Tommy, Sean, Obake, and Zartan continue into Springfield. This is a pretty big milestone in the Zartan character recovery as he is on the path to eventually joining the Joes on an actual mission in the future, and very shortly will lead the Dreadnoks in a subterfuge to exfiltrate these characters out of Springfield. Heather Collins watches the news with the nosey neighbors providing some narrative exposition. The openness of Cobra operating in a town so blatantly really should be capitalized on in a movie if they ever try to focus on ARAH again. The newsman wears a Python Patrol suitjacket. This is the family from whom Dawn receives her Crimson Guard Immortal uniform. Wendy Ling-Torres is back, now being brought into Springfield for further manipulation by Mindbender. Mindbender brags and Fred days down a "if I were a sycophantic lick-spittle I would agree with you 100%" which is a pretty funny Hama-ism. In the background is an Immortal, whom is probably Heather. And it is. She just bleached her hair from the black color it has been for several issues now to blond instead. Because if you want to really blend in… Dawn arrives and declares that she wants to get rid of Snake-Eyes' memories. Heather will help. The ninjas in Zartan's van arrive. In the letters page, someone requests the introduction of Helix.

Destro is still in a Cobra leadership position. Dawn Moreno is in the Springfield Community Center and has teamed up with Heather Collins. They have been joined by the Zartan / Storm Shadow / Snake-Eyes II / Obake crew who have wiped the floor with Cobra troops of many types. The Vipers outside are sending in one of their own suited-up in SNAKE armor for protection. In Darklonia, Grosz is with Spirit and Roadblock. They take out some HISS tanks and a Rage being operated by Blue Ninjas. They do this first on the ground by commandeering a "Retaliation HISS" then use it to attack the other vehicles. We are informed that a Retaliation HISS is stronger than any other HISS tanks offensively. Defensively? Well the crew is openly exposed but I guess that doesn't matter here. The Dreadnoks show up to lend aid to Destro, however Zartan (who is fully invisible) is able to secretly convey plans to Zarana. Heather has reached her family, and they realize that Sean is Snake-Eyes II. Dawn is having a flashback of Snake-Eyes FIRST time in the machine (that should settle the argument of "when" her memories come from) and Senator Wendy Ling-Torres is being released from the scanner in real life. Mindbender is put into the machine. Obake Obaason lets the reader know that the clan leaders never loved Snake-Eyes more than Storm Shadow. She also (and this is interesting) suggests that eventually "wraith" Snake-Eyes will choose to just leave Dawn as a choice of his own. That he knows it's the right thing to do. About forty issues from now we will be back in this room again playing the same game and Snake-Eyes still hasn't left this girl alone by then. Still, this is possible foreshadowing of a Dawn endgame. Heather puts a virus in the machine and subjects Mindbender to it at Dawn's direction. Upon escaping the room, Dawn greets Tommy as "my brother." The ninja crew and friends are ready for "Coooobra!"-chanting Blur Ninjas and BATs and a half hour wait until the Dreadnoks show up to ferry them outside. Dr. Venom is back (again)! Last time he came back in the body of Billy, which was all right. Then his spirit was exorcised away to face the vengeance of Ghost Kwinn. Now his ghost is in the body of Dr. Mindbender's clone. Which, let's face it... very GIJoe science fiction appropriate. Comic-booky. I still wish that Venom had just stayed in Mindbender's body this time, I liked it. In the letters page, the editor kinda makes fun of the fact that Sneak-Peak is bleeding out but never appeared in this issue, and a fan writes a gushy love letter about Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow.
