I liked it. It has some pacing problems and stuff that don't go anywhere, but it was more packed than the previous issues. The porn actresses that attack Zarana and the fact that Zartan just *knows* Cobra Commander is behind it is just confusing. Shouldn't we have seen the call asking for ransom over Zarana?
I just read GIJoe COBRA from 2009, and now I'm moving into the Cobra Civil War from 2011. Let's see how that is different from this.

Cover: Zarana mouths offs to Mindbender. Gums up the works. She's got bite.
What's with Larry Hama and Cobras in museums? We see CC's eyes behind those glasses. It's strange. Dude is Ned Flanders crossed with Dialtone. CC didn't bring enough security. Damn, is he stupid for a guy once got shot point blank and was buried alive. Destro could've killed CC at any time. I don't buy the power vacuum excuse, more like CC is the only one dumb enough to buy shoddy MARS junk. GI JOE just watches it all big screen tv. Duke aiding CC? Call Mindbender? How about sending someone down there and putting two shots in the back of CC's head, Duke? How about that shit? THis is all so stupid we have to immediately insert a new hostage crisis somewhere. Send Muskrat to the desert and Long Range is a sniper like the other Long Range. And now the JOES are ruthless killing machines. Cobra is joke they keep around to laugh at, actual threats get head shots. Dr. Burkhart, international professional hostage, is back. Yay. She's either the dumbest idealist alive or has a sick fetish. Redo a "Fred is NOT MY DAD scene", like this is 1984 again. Tyrone's brother as lastest white dude into ninjitsu. Get a life, middle aged dude. Since when is Budo part of the Arashikage? Scrub the floor? Buy a Swiffer or Floormate, Budo. Get with the times. Overall: Never read this issue, or the next, so on. Where was Zarana attacking Mindy? Does this happen later? NEVER? Whaaaat? The CC, Zartan and Destro non-drama just makes me want all 3 characters killed off so that some unpredictable villains will replace them. Last edited by Sean_C; 07-27-2020 at 10:45 PM.. |

At the time there seemed to be a lot of demand (at least on the boards. And maybe the IDW boards, not sure) for Mindy to die. When this cover was solicited I thought “oh hell
Yeah! It’s going to happen.” Why on earth did I think a scene on the cover would be in the comic. That hasn’t happened since, I dunno, issue 50? (Not really but you get the Point) |

Trying to remember: was this the first time we've been to "Olliestan"? Get it... Ollie.. Stan... nyuk nyuk.
To this day, they still haven't explained (or even mentioned) two big questions that came out of this issue: 1- How is Long Range, formerly the driver of the Thunderclap, now a sniper? 2- In Budo's first (and only) Marvel appearance in issue 88, no connection to the Arashikage was mentioned or implied. Hama clarified this, in the letters page shortly after, when he said Budo had no connection to the Arashikage. Sure, it always seemed weird that a random recruit would run around in samurai gear.

Cover: Torpedo struggles not to cop a feel. Long Range gives up.
Burkhart has an intense fear of heights, but not of getting held hostage and bad things happening to her. Insurgent has the biggest walkie-talkie in the world. Lifeline gets possessed by the spirit of Stalker and has to mouth his dialogue about defending the rights of those who disagree. It is a little odd that Lifeline is resting his arm on a machine gun as he says it. Cobra Commander, unmasked in a hospital bed. Roadpig broke his body, but it's CC's mystique that is dead. Fred is a Fred series CG, we get it. Okay, that story line needs to be set up but can we do it without the usually tropes? Overall: Olliestan heroes try to stop the infidel forces of the great satan from freeing the blonde demoness...This story might be a case of too close to real world to be much fun, but at least the Joes aren't pulling punches when it comes to genocidal insurgents. Still, at times like this I find myself preferring the over the topness of the vintage cartoon with its Cobra super weapons and silly characters. |
