Like Nero, I hate any and all Revanche storylines. But here we go. Let's see if I can get through this.
Cover showdown: I'll take SE & Baroness. Very plain, but I was slightly excited at the idea of Joes and Cobras teaming up to destroy Revanche in vengeance over Billy's death. Plus, the other cover is a Terminator style Revanche Robot Ninja, which again, I hate. The exposition heavy Revanche scene. Meh. Destro finding that Baroness is lying about "doing something rash about Billy" is pretty cool. And I like where it eventually leads. But more on that in a future issue, True Believers! Now honestly as I scan the pages I find myself not even reading the word bubbles as the ninjas battle BN-001. I just can't bring myself to care. Oh well. CC getting info on Revanche and shooting Lady Robot is cool. I sense a pissed off Commander which is what I want to see here. Scarlett gets to think about why Baroness is flying to Broca Beach. Action packed! CC says he will wipe Revanche off of the face of the Earth! Thank God! (Too bad he will change his mind later). I dunno. That's about it. I hate Revanche, but at least it looks like Baroness and Cobra Commander will soon team up with Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow to wipe them out. Even though that's not exactly what happens. Toy pack tie-in? I guess a re-issue Terminator action figure. Um...guess that's it. |

Cover showdown: I think spaghetti westerns are over referenced and I say that as a person who likes them. But that's the cover I have, so it wins.
Astro-Vipers pilot helicopters now? Boris mentions Overkill but he's not in this issue. Robot Freds...you Broca believe it! Crazy cyborg woman killed 15 Vipers reminding us that Cobra sucks even against non Joe threats. Or was it BN-001 who killed them? CC is really intense on going against the Blue Ninjas. I guess this means they'll never team up...right? Dr. Tchen murders Boris...stone cold. Then Fred cyborgs kill women and children. This issue gets dark. She gets all Linda Blair Exorcist on us. Joes don't have authorization to fight crazy ninja robots. SO LET'S ALL GO ON LEAVE...and somehow take our weapons with us or have access to similar. But they aren't "vigilantes", though. Right? Overall: Cobra fails, to stop cyborgs, the murder of their families. Why is anyone part of this organization again? Storm Shadow gets hurt, but we'll find out later tis only a flesh wound! Baroness is no doctor. Buh-bye Boris, you paid the price for meeting Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, death by association. |

An Astro-Viper was piloting a cargo plan in #169. I kind of like it. What else are they going to do? Cobra almost never goes into space. It doesn't necessarily feel like a Hama script choice.

I'm pro toy representation. It's funny those Cobra Copters have had a succession of pilots over the years, most of them non-toy pilots, and now we got Astro-Vipers in the cockpit, not Gyro-Vipers or Heli-Vipers.

Viper cover wins for me for an actual depiction of an event.
Wow, I hadn't noticed that Astro-Viper previously. First a dead cameo on a pin-up, then a cameo in an actual issue, now a line of dialogue. They're going places! One day they'll make an actual appearance. In other obscure character news, Law has been replaced by Rapid Fire. The smartphone-era has given Snake-Eyes a whole new method of communication. I bet with his ninja-skills he could text at normal speaking speed if he wanted to. I wonder if he ever responds to his messages? I guess I'll crawl over the finish line with the Snake-Eyes body count, even though nothing is happening on that field nowadays. He decapitates a robot, even though it might have been dead already. Her brain is still human, fools, so I guess it counts as a kill for SE. In honor of issue 176, it's now 176 kills in 117 appearances. Whose fancy legs are those on the last page?

I appreciate how the double narratives are following the same path. This is similar to #26. We skipped over the "Yearbook" which I think comes between this issue and the prior issue. It was focused on a group of Crimson Guards who are fakes, then here in this issue it's a similar plot. Snake-Eyes is having a hard time trusting Baroness. Has he seen her since she shot Scarlett left New York in an Aspid?
I would never have thought that the pilot was an Astro-Viper from the back view until it was pointed out. The rappelling Vipers are awesome. Inker error on the second page, fourth panel. This Tele-Viper using a cellphone camera while stabilized on a rifle? He's great. Way better than his classic weapon. That's new to me and a fresh change. New Jersey, wonder if that's near Broca Beach? I hear that theory one of you had about Springfield being near Ft. Wadsworth and it reminds me of this. Sad to see the Rickshaw-Viper is on lunch break possibly forever in this issue. The Darklon subplot, which is one of my favorite stories from the new half of ARAH, actually is much longer and spread out more than I remember. Fond of seeing Tommy have a well established car in multiple issues. "We closed down half the sleeper cells..." supports my view that Cobra has been treading water financially and is sort of stuck long-term after their European conquests and their governmental freelancing. They've been in a rut most of this half of ARAH and it's probably due to overspending on extravagant missions and their rather spectacular losses recently after major over-reaches. This is reinforced by the panic of Cobra in this issue. They really need those Vipers back, but Broca Beach should have a strong force normally. Still think this is due to the European conquests and international expenses Cobra Commander went wild on at the end of the original half of the series. 15 dead troops in Chen's home. However, none cut into parts from laser whips. The tension in the Cobra Command room is strong. Mindbender trying to put the Commander in his place again. This time around my focus on the relationship between Cobra Commander and Dr. Mindbender is more important to watch for me. This violence towards Mindbender is really something. Also the way that Mindbender acts towards the Commander as well. I try to imagine what Cobra would look like if managed by Zartan, or Baroness as leader. Just realizing I've never stopped to consider what a Mindbender Cobra would be like. (Probably more weird than I want). Alopecious aasvogel = bald vulture. And so Boris, who introduced us to Blue Ninjas, is executed by the sixth or seventh generation of them we have seen since their first appearance. I really don't remember their evolution being so swift. "My brain is still human!" Why does Chen want the Arashikage Clan to end? I feel like the ties to the Arashikage sort of disappear at some point soon (maybe after the death of Boris)? I still would like to see Alpha Prime be related to the clan, or related to Tommy's father,or something like that to bring the whole story back around before the Blue Ninjas story is over. Don't remember the Fed series twist but that too is some body horror, face-off type stuff. So many versions of Larry's interest in post-humanism. It seemed like BN-001 was much farther into the story than this. The slaughter of Broca Beach is a pretty big deal. This issue feels a bit like filler, but the events are very powerful. Could this be the worst thing that ever happens to Cobra? I don't usually comment on the covers, but I prefer cover B with the Vipers rappelling. I have the cover A version with the trio "good, bad and ugly." If anyone wants to trade their B for my A cover, I would happily trade.
