Not only that, but this is a very timely appearance for our 41st President.
Also: In this issue: Snake-Eyes says “When?!” Letters page reveal: 3 guys escaped the freighter. All in all a fun one-in-done by Mr. Trimpe. Someone decided there needed to be some space between “Destro: Search and Destroy” and “Destro: Search and Destroy”. Good call. |

Collector's item! It's the first appearance of the original Fake-Eyes!
It's the 90s and they forgot to mention that. It's also the first appearance of Storm Shadow V3. This version of SS is portrayed by a different actor. Whitewashing! By the way, last issue was also a collector's item because it was the only one that featured SS V2 and SE V4 together, just like #91 was the only one with both V2s together. Trimpe's love for odd flying contraptions also allows us to get the only appearance of the Skystorm. I bought a boxed one in a flea market for peanuts, but ended up never assembling it because it was so horrible. Anyway, it's a non-Hama filler issue, so mustn't be too critical. I guess it's on par with the other Trimpe issues? I remember as a kid I was hella entertained by all the smart ass banter, especially on the page with the smart bomb, so I guess this issue did its job back then. The synthoids.. I mean echo robots are a bit out there based on the level of technology we've seen in the series so far, but whatev. This issue is making me go through an existential crisis. Does the Snake-Eyes body count increase here? He's using a half nelson of death on page 8, and on the next one he throws some cotton candy at a pair of gloves. In the end it's revealed everyone's a robot, so does your body count increase if you kill robots? They leave bodies, so I'll say yes. Also I want the body count to increase after last issue's Mickey Mouse shenanigans. That also means Hawk and Bill are mass murderers. Besides the two mentioned bodies, SE takes out four other defenseless robots during the massacre for a total of six. That's an even 100 bodies in 71 appearances for the man who abhors killing. Quote:
Yes, that's Trump himself personally overseeing the building of the robot army for his Cobra allies. Unfortunately it looks like he's blown up, so I'm going to assume the guy in the white house is an echo robot. Some good old-fashioned rhetoric in that letter. "I'm not a commie, but..." I'll have to start using that line. Yeah, Marvel 'decided' on a lot of these space issues back in the day. But I'm not complaining! It gave us issue #20: G.I.Joe starring Doc-Fuse and Luke Skywalker in his flying handbag.

Think I'm on around issue 70, and about half the special missions.

First non-Hama issue in the main title since #20. Another reminder of what GI JOE would be like without Hama...sort of, characters wouldn't be what they were without him, though. Also, the last Trimpe artwork issue.
Cobra Commander kills off another underused Cobra...LOADMASTER. Skystorm X-Wing Copter finally used, years after its toy left stores. Who's the Joe who jokes about the Shrink? A rarely seen character named HEADCASE? Lift Ticket? "Surprise, surprise, the Cobra Consulate...!" Trimpe restored that place and then Hama goes along with it. Bottom of page 6, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow and Scarlett look hung-over and btw, Snake-Eyes can talk....that big faker. Is this the final appearance of the Cobra troopers in the vintage run? Hitting a BAT on the back of its head takes it out? Storm Shadow getting beaten by a bogus Snake-Eyes is nice. Storm Shadow threatening to shoot Scarlett in the head, well, we know THAT won't kill her. Page 27. Scarlett's backside. Mannish back, skintight buttocks.?? A JOE SUBMARINE? What??? They just sacrifice hundreds of millions of dollars of X-19 for no good reason. Letters: Cobra recruits at college campuses. : "I think it would be a good idea to create an all-woman special team for GI JOE." Is that you, Aubrey Sitterson? Summary: It's disposable somewhat-amusing fluff. The huge leap forward in robotics is ignored because it's not a Hama issue and Larry disavows those. Yes, Storm Shadow becomes comic relief. CC can pilot a Stiletto, but he's probably a robot. Last edited by Sean_C; 12-04-2018 at 12:38 AM.. |

Ah, I haven't read this one...either in a long time or ever? So here's a long commentary.
Andrew Wildman becomes the regular artist. He's good overall, but has his quirks, as evidenced right off the bat, his gaping mouths and squinting eyes thing. I was wrong before, Cobra Commander wears his 1991 outfit for one time after the Search and Destroy trilogy, this issue. Cobra Commander values his money more than killing Destro outright, which he totally can do since Destro came to the ship with no friendly escorts, but then Rashid will delete all of CC's accounts, I guess. When did Destro have time to get this title transfer, during the non-canon break last issue? CC calls the transcarpathia castle so hard to ghetto....my bad, "hard to get to". It's the RETURN TO THE SILENT CASTLE...and we'll never really leave for the rest of the 35 issues. Oh, there's a few breaks, but... Battle Copters, Destro actually wanted two of those death traps? Lots of exposition and issue 21 recapping. CC reveals to the Night Creepers they cannot be rehired until they get stupider costumes and also there's a brainwave scanner hidden in the Silent Castle, which makes one wonder if Scarlett doesn't also have a sleeper agent program that CC just forgot about. But then Destro acts like it wasn't there before, bummer. Baroness wonders why Destro has a chess piece of her in an outfit she hadn't even worn until after her surgery. Hawk's shirt changes color from white to green...maybe he's really Zartan? Castle is infested with vermin: ninjas. Slice and Dice apparently don't work for Cobra at this point. Dice wants to "Do them", because Dice will shag anything. There's too many euphemisms out there. Slice and Storm Shadow use the Force to sense each other. Rereading these issues, I never noticed how much use AERO-VIPER got. The code word is "obvious pop culture reference". "That's four words!" Destro had a combat computer in his mask. Evil Tony Stark? He also has his HAN SOLO blaster handy. Red Ninjas are a joke if Destro and Baroness can kill four of them so quickly. So much for "being at the mercy of the Red Ninjas". Big Dumb Vehicles debut. Dusty gets his new duds. Stalker doesn't but is along because he's an overused character. Weird Dr. Mindbender art and we can't even confirmation if he was bald or shaved his head. Letters: Ghostrider calling Slipstream "Dogfight" was not a mistake. Some fans are weenies, but they have the right to free speech. This issue was a lot of set-up for the next 35 issues. "Destro: Search and Destroy" led into the never-ending ninjas and silent castle saga. That's an exaggeration, but for a castle that hadn't appeared in nearly 100 issues, the saga gets to be overcompensation. |
