Really good issue. As always, at the time I was a bit indifferent to some of the "newer" Joes in the squad and wishing to see more old favorites joining Stalker. Always glad to see Firefly!
Not too long after Die Hard was in theaters, Joe swings down and crashes through a skyscraper window. Twenty-four years later Bruce Willis is playing Joe Colton on the big screen. |

On the topic of backpacks (pretty much completely irrelevant to this issue, or most issues, since I don't recall ever seeing anyone reaching into a pack for gear), I think there are really only 3 useful generic packs on the Joe side: 1984 Roadblock (mainly for machine gunners, with a removable ammo box, a tripod, and space for him to pack his gear); 1985 Flint (with a canteen, grenades, and dynamite, so handy for anyone doing demolition or breaching work); and 1987 Falcon (with a radio, plus 2 canteens, rope, and a machete, so good for any team leader or communicator). The rest of the backpacks are pretty useless. Sure - they hold socks and chocolate bars and a 6-pack of yo joe cola, but otherwise they don't look mission-essential.

25th Anniversary? Didn't Joe debut at NY Toyfair in February of 1964?
That IG on inside cover has talent. Tilting the rocket box out the window on one leg and firing at the Tomahawk. Didn't the toy Tomahawk have seat belts? Do dudes really carry on conversations while fast roping down from choppers? I guess they are elite. Repeater can even fire the steady gun while doing it. They are switching uni's so much they may be a point were they can just attack in their own clothes and the other side will get blamed anyway. Did anyone notice the letter from Pablo Hildalgo? Any other famous people write in? |

Cover actually represents a scene in the issue, though the terrorist on the cover isn't holding a gun, maybe some code restriction about threatening kids? For all the buyer knows Shockwave is saving the boy from an abusive dad. (BTW, the cover actually gives away the twist...look at the family photo on the wall!)
The first non-Trimpe drawn Special Missions issue. Dave Cockrum does well. Chuckles is back, and LJ is with him. Kid's name is Mikey, because most white bread american boy name of the time, I guess. Erich, the guy threatening Mikey has a goatee (van dyke), because this was back when only bad people had those. FBI guy Saxon is back, but it hardly matters, characters like him only exist to make wrong choices. The murder of the Mulvaney family caught on camera is kinda brutal for an 80's comic aimed at kids. Hama doesn't even give the killers any political motivations or backstory this time. "Anybody can shoot poorly armed farmers! Those two downstairs are a breed apart!" Yeah, they can shoot unarmed suburbanites! "And as much as I'm against killing..." says clean cut blond guy. This was the most deceptive line in the issue, because it has to be sarcasm. So Hit & Run, wearing mostly white clings to the dark colored car, while Shockwave, in blue, runs across the snow field. What? Page 17, the word of the day is revealed RICTUS. "See you at the party, rictus!" Page 19, Lady Jaye dies...nope, she's wearing actual body armor. Chuckles goes John Woo dual-pistols mode and hits nothing, making him look like a Counter Strike noob. 22 reveals why realistic looking water guns get people killed. Laszlo straight up kills a pretty blond lady. Hard corps. Oh, she was a psychotic killer. That's right. Lady Jaye with her cracked ribs would not be walking around like that. This issue was all about the twist, the reveal at the end that it was all just an ad for SEMPER FI, Marvel's USMC war comic! In regards to the rictus twist. Clever, though Mikey is very blonde and his parents have brown and dark brown/black hair. Though, blondes get darker with age, so maybe his joker-faced dad was a blonde, too. Hawk's arrival at the end and where he says "What do you way we make Laszlo here an honorary Joe!" seemed out of place. (This never happens.) Good issue. There's only so many ways hostage crisis issues can go. And how many Special Missions issues involve hostages? At least 5 plus the preview in ARAH #50. Comic pack: Snow Chuckles and Hit & Run...third figure is there is no third figure. Last edited by Sean_C; 04-19-2018 at 11:03 AM.. |

Cover: In this issue, G.I.Joe is involved in a swatting hoax some punk kid did to his dad after losing on Call of Duty.
This is a fairly dullish mid-level SM issue. Not much to say here. Bonus points for H&R and Shockwave. Yeah, the issue is all about the twist. Interesting premise, but doesn't really float in the end. Laszlo and Fatima have some guts, trash-talking to a pair of psychos who get their jollies out of killing innocent civilians. Luckily they suddenly turn into normal people once the secret is revealed to the reader. Likewise, the drooling psychos have nicely calmed down and turned into an apple pie commercial. The terrorists are some of the most reprehensible ones in the series history. They kill Chuckles and his family. Shockwave is a grin-recognizing expert. Good thing he doesn't shoot Chuckles on page 13. All people without a ski mask look alike. Art-wise, Dave Cockrum is a vast improvement on Trimpe. Cockrum was one of the better Marvel artists in the 70s, and one of the all-time great character-designers, responsible for a ton of iconic X-Men characters. Unfortunately he wasn't much good with deadlines. Wouldn't have minded seeing him on SM (or even the main title) on a regular basis.

Mikey is a bogus name he gave the terrorists. His real name is Joey. Quote:
Chuckles goes comic book vigilante and accidentally caps Laszlo and Fatima with stray bullets. There's another twist. Erich is actually the son, a counter-strike playing neckbeard type. Mikey is the third terrorists, who suffers from Peter Pan syndrome and wore stilts and body armor at the airport. The parents suffered retinal shellshock at 'nam and couldn't recognize their son from afar.

Are the "bad guys" really terrorists? They seem more like sociopath mass murderers. I'll admit there's likely a lot of overlap in the Venn Diagram of those groups, but there's nothing to suggest the trio have any political purpose behind their actions. Shockwave is perfect for this job. Chuckles and Lady Jaye? Not so much, unless someone originally decided that the only viable plan would revolve around impersonating an Avon saleswoman. Sneak Peak would have been a great choice for surveillance. And what about Flint?! They play up his rescue prowess in his file card, and how many rescues have we actually seen? Aside from Hit n Run's coloring, good to see him. Hopefully seeing a family home didn't stir up memories of his life before a drunk driver . . . Quote:
Anyone notice that the FBI HRT has better gear than the Joes? They've got scoped M-16s, body armor, belt gear, seasonally-appropriate uniforms . . . in fact, it wasn't until re-reading that I realized Laszlo grabbed a rifle from an HRT guy and not Hit n Run. |
