Cover is 'Meh'. Could be better. Could be worse. Should I be wondering who they are chasing and shooting at?
Inside of cover, "Now, you can be the next Joe!". Steel Brigade figure for $7.50 plus $1.50 postage. Do you think they will still honor? Star Viper is the Matrix before the Matrix. Who said there was no sex in GI Joe? That thing between the B and CC was so steamy they had to show it through reflection in her glasses. Don't let me get started on Flint and Jaye. More Nixon jokes. Hama must have loved ole Tricky Dick. Skidmark. Bad name. Worse personality. "This is Iceberg, he never takes off his cold weather gear even in the Utah desert" it should have said. Ok.the Wild Card breaking everything humor is growing on me. I'm so glad I explained the hush hush gizmo to the noobs for no reason or we would have no idea what Star Viper stole. Jeez.. Star Viper would have broken every bone is his legs with a jump from that height right? "Thank god we left the new toys outside, or the commercial would be over!" Do you think Star Viper is pumping AC/DC music directly into his mind while driving? Kind of reminds me of 'Iron Eagle' when Doug Masters has to listen to his music in order to take out all the Libyans. Fine issue. Like Low-Tech said it sets up the beginning of the ...... |

Cover is good. Although some Joes should be missing their heads after exiting the Mamba as such. I love the Cobra crowned Concertina wire. Nice touch. Let’s me have a pretty good idea where they are landing from the cover. Inside cover art good as well. Good likenesses.
Nothing suspicious at this Top Secret base as a giant C-5A Galaxy lands next to three Quonset huts in the middle of the desert. The Cobra parade stand is a great scene. Page 8, panel 2....everybody is there. In Major Bludd is back. Help me out...Who is standing right behind and between Baroness and Serpy? Looks like Jason Vorhees. Am I just having a forgetful moment and it's someone obvious, or someone else? Please help. Great scene. The Star Viper talking to himself about the glory he will receive juxtaposed against the Commander and Serpy trading insults. Hama is so great here. They should have just let them duke it out. Would have saved a lot of Cobra resources. That is one bad ass recon team. Only way could be better....Put Stalker in charge. Remember Lt Falcon is a "gold-plated goof-off." According to Keel Haul, Cobra beefed up their defenses against amphibious landing. He mentions everything except the crocodiles. Ok, I love Larry Hama. He says he never uses thought bubbles in Joe. But then what is going on with page 17 then? Are Serpy's other personalities talking out loud? C'mon they are thoughts. I'm nit-picking. It's a great panel though. Do you think Fred has read any of the books on the shelf? Ok, I assume the bowl is potato chips. But what is the Baroness eating? Nice sofa too. "You're such a card!" Make mine Minh! Destro and his commanders in the lounge chair. Priceless! This issue is a great start to the probably the best loved arc in the entire series. CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE! Sneak-Peek wore his white uniform on the cover. The art's good through-out.
Mutt and Gung-Ho have decided to ditch their toy colors. How is a C5 Galaxy landing on what looks like desert soil? "That's me, Troop!" "MP's, arrest that man! The real General Hawk would call me Airman Tucker, not 'troop'!" General Hollingsworth looks a bit pale. Mainframe77, I've no idea who the white masked guy is. That's one the great mysteries of the comic. LOL. Retcon him into being MORTAL or DE-ACO? Did Wagner start drawing both crimson twins but only finished one? Along with Bludd, Firefly is back, only to jump ship when the shooting starts. The twins return from an absence of like a year? For no given reason they take Serpentor's side. Are they aware CC is an imposter? Are they working on behalf of the real Commander? For that matter, why doesn't Serpentor just shout-out, "This Cobra Commander is just a Fred series siegie!" The rule that Flint and Falcon can't be shown together is in effect on page 14. Tracked submarines are mentioned like they are big deal, when the BUGGs later appear they are immediately disposed of. I feel like we missed some great chaotic action before night fell on Cobra Island. I like that CG getting shot in the head. "Legion of he nameless and soulless"...begs the question, why are the masses of rank and file Cobras supporting Cobra Commander? Is he the comeback kid, even though the Frusenland op failed and Sierra Gordo interest were lost? Why is Croc Master on Serpy's side, it's a fashion thing, right? "Good grief! I still have it!" Dr. Mindbender is a grown-up Charlie Brown confirmed! Anyone who owned a Mamba toy knows the cockpit isn't roomy and the pods can hold just one figure period. This just kills the issue for me. LOL. How is Serpentor a "parliamentary monarchy"? Did I never see Cobra's House of Commons? Fred VII wears red socks. He's a Boston fan. Send just one Mamba to shoot down Mindbender's copter. Oh, it wouldn't matter if he sent a squadron, Cobra pilots would screw it up. Serpentor sends Bendy off and talks to him as the doctor is in the cockpit of a helicopter taking off, meaning Mindbender couldn't hear a damned thing Serpy said. Serpy has a built in helmet mike that he used to communicate with the copter...yeah, that's it. "August commander"....take a drink! Captain Minh go mucho loco and talks to himself in swamp. Meanwhile, on Destro's ship...the Valkris...manned by droids...oh, that was the cartoon. Where's Voltar? Also, Destro has spies on Cobra Island, but we never learn who they are. No letter's page because Nick Fury has been betrayed. Watch out. Very good issue. Not a ninja in sight. Last edited by Sean_C; 01-15-2018 at 12:05 PM.. |

Good issue. Yeah, one of the all-time great Joe stories is here at last. I like how the Cobra civil war starts from a completely childish and trivial argument. So many loyal troops lost their lives for nothing. Fred's comment on Serpentor's toy no longer being on the shelves seems to hit a nerve. If you look really closely at the fight scene, you'll see Thrasher still has his arm on a sling. Amazing eye for detail from Wagner.
Keel-Haul has finally managed to get rid of the imposter admiral, and makes his debut. Sneak-Peek is put into good use, but his periscope is too small. Can't see squat with that thing. Flint loans his uniform to Falcon for this issue. Except the suspenders. Those stay on always. Superqualified Gyro-Viper correctly deduces that's a Joe Mamba. It's his undoing, though. If he'd have ignored the Mamba, he would've blown up Mindbender, kept the Joes out and won the war for Fred early. Special Missions 12 on Wednesday.

Hama even had Captain America make a Nixon's pardon reference when he was writing The Avengers. Hama forgot in the Marvel Universe Nixon was never pardoned. He committed suicide at the white house in front of Cap. Quote:

So has Airborne when we next meet him (soon). There's kinda a reason for this. The artists/colorists have clearly switched from the toys to Order of Battle for reference. Why OOB had those colors I don't know. But I always thought these were the default colors, and was surprised when I finally saw all the toys. Quote:

It'd only cause even the Siegies to flip. Cobra forces all back a people's man who can throw a proper party. Quote:

Maybe the spy is Scrap-Iron, a Destro faithful. I've read that series. Hydra just barges in on SHIELD HQ, and all the agents piss their pants. Joe would take out those schoolboys without breaking a sweat. This is the longest we'll go in the main title without SNAKE-EYES.

I liked the Fury ad art. Miss the letters. More Thomas Wheeler. Maybe you'll get a ninja in the issue. Fingers crossed. |
