Cover art is great, have to make allowances for its liberties, like where is the rest of the WHALE in that scene?
The locals mocking the JOES...I attribute this less to the southern stereotypes and more to post-Vietnam anti-military sentiments. It won't the last time civies make life tough for the Joes, but such a scene today in a modern comic wouldn't make any sense. Anyway, enough politics. Firefly is well drawn on page 3. Too bad the colorist thought Destro neck was silver and his medallion flesh colored. Now for the Springer bashing...that ain't no Rattler I ever seen before! Did Wild Weasel's plane have shape changing abilities? New Joes on page 4. The mustached stretcher bearer wearing a green Duke shirt and red turtle neck. Apparently his name is Bank-Shot...according to dialogue I'm misinterpreting for fun. Or that's the name of white-Doc (Doc-Fuze? White-Coat?). I guess the black haired guy is Clutch? Or his clone, Double-Clutch. And on the last panel, Roadblock takes off his fake mustache he usually wears. The SWAMP PEOPLE crossover event! Destro and Firefly catch someone poaching gators at night! Will Firefly make a quarter-sized kill shot on him? Cobra Commander has a rally...doesn't wear his hood. Dude's got it backwards again. Odd Crimson Guard uniform. Code name "Smith" but we'll never refer to that again. Noble Destro kicks a tied-up man into harbor waters...that's murder, Destro. So much for honor. Firefly does well considering the WHALE's .50 turret mount had been broken previous issue. If they fixed it, they didn't say...I dunno. Where's my "I Dunno Prize" More "careers in southern law enforcement" adventures with the local cops...how did the hydrofoil passing over unbutton their shirts? It's all totally unnecessary comic relief. Maybe Hama was mocking the south. Diner big enough to drive the WHALE through...uh...no. Destro now has invisible wrist rockets on both arms. LOL at Tripwire's scared face. LOL at Wild Bill scaring Duke, too. Unknown Joe firefighters. "Cutter's been acting weird, Duke..." never mentioned again, is it? Cutter is obviously reckless. Tripwire's chance to shine gets stolen by a short timer and Roadblock's (ridiculously lucky) throwing arm. It's like Hama was mocking Tripwire and Duke in this issue. Of course, RB could've unknowningly killed people on deck. Tripwire mentions Topside, but he won't be a joe until 1990. Where's my "No, Duh, Prize?" Toy-comic disconnect...the WHALE's depth charge are too small on the toy for Destro and Firefly to hid in...they should've use the spring launched Recon Sled! The moccasin is a smaller vehicle I wonder if adding a figure was a later decision by Hasbro after they had already submitted the vehicle to Marvel to use in the comic.
Somebody ask Larry and Kirk... hmm ok nope but one interesting thing, it just says "Cobra Pilot" in the toy fair catalog so Copperhead did not have a name yet. That could be a reason why Hama did not use him, and by the time he could, that ship had sailed? Toy Fair catalogs - 3DJOES Moving on, re-reading these issues ~30 years later gives a great glimpse into social norms. The DOD was still a scorned institution, and it took time to turn that sentiment around. As for mindless sitcoms, that pretty much sums up the '80's! I too enjoyed the "bicycle repair kit" moment. Those things have all sorts of uses. Loved the 'gator poacher! In retrospect, I had a momentary thought that there could have been a subsequent tie-in with some of Muskrat's family (heck - this title is based on ridiculous family connections (maybe Snake Eyes or Cobra Commander are really Kevin Bacon!), but it's the wrong state. |

I already said I always like the first parts more, but this is a good continuation for last issue.
Yeah, the cover is an all-time great! Who needs 90s holo-nonsense when you can roll like this? Destro desperately trying to be a badass in this one. Dude's trying to kill the Joes for real again! Whatever happened to this guy? He also talks big about evening the score with CC, but ends up wimping out big time when he gets back. Quote:
Doc-Fuze doesn't recognize Deep-Six because he's not wearing his sardine can. Springer seriously messes up the generic Joes here. They do have the real Doc still on board the Dragonfly. Or is that a smudge of rust on the windshield? Hama sure must have loved the concept. Siegies brought in well before the toys were out. And it shows. Springer never did get them right, did he? Smith didn't like his name or family, so he changed both for next issue. What would you guys have thought in 1984 if you knew the guy in the backseat becomes a Snake-Eyes? Comics. "Too good to squander on a battlefield. But we'll do it anyway!" Quote:

Love the crash scene. Who was going to make who into a soldier again, Duke? Quote:
Tripwire almost gets his hero moment, though, when he trips on the bomb.. I mean makes a noble sacrifice. Just let him sacrifice himself, guys. It's better for everyone. So that's what happened. The explosion killed Doc-Fuze, Grunt 'N Roll and a Clutch. They're never seen again. Boy was it awkward when Roadblock found out after making that speech. But not forever! Thank you, IDW run!
