I like how much ground each issue covered (I'm through the first two). A lot of comics from this time would move very slowly or have tons of exposition from the "narrator" and the characters. Hama keeps everything moving at a nice pace.

Could've been another guy named Gregor. That's a really common name, right? LOL. Last edited by Sean_C; 08-28-2016 at 06:37 PM.. |

My first issue was #120, but I quickly picked up every back issue I could find. Spent probably 15 years thinking Breaker was eating a peace of paper, be my now wife pointed out it was gum wrapper. So obvious now. Hama did a really great job of high lighting the entire cast of characters in just one issue.

Of course anyone wanting to go full-on fanboy can also imagine the proto-Mindbender from #39 is the same guy who has a cameo in the interrogation scene in #1. Also, Recondo never killed Gregor and Dimitri, he just stole their guns, so they went on to kidnap Burkhart a couple more times. Favorite quotes from this issue: "We were completely surprised..." "Not as surprised as I. I hadn't expected any of you to survive! The G.I.Joe team is less efficient than I thought!" "You will soon see the distinct advantage of having no scruples whatsoever!" All in all a classic issue and a great start to the series. Bob McLeod really made the usually quite average Herb Trimpe look good here. Also, the guy on the cover is clearly Hawk. Compare to the Grunt on the upper-left corner or their faces in the actual issue.

I was waiting to mention this. I figured him for grad-school Mindbender. He was going for his PH.D. on the Cobra GI Bill. Must have been interning during his summers. But what a coincidence if the Dr Mindbender character did not spring from that picture.

Some more observations...
I love the Joe Combat Training Center. So much going on in one small room. Live fire exercises right next to the parallel bars and rings. Liability Insurance must cost a ton for that facility. Where's MARS when you need 'em. Cobra flying MIG 21 jets from the 60's. I know they are still used in certain countries but I guess at this point Cobta had not adopted their bleeding edge, safety be damned technology. Cobra Commander is cold blooded. Taking out the village as a distraction/diversion. Not the buffoon he is sometimes portrayed as. Cobra seems like a legit threat. I love the drawing of the VAMP & HAL in battle. The one where Clutch says it's "stark fear and blind luck". Seems like suicide driving right up to Cobra without any cover but I love that drawing. |

Op Lady Doomsday is awesome - it holds up as one of the all-time best G.I. Joe comics ever! I missed it when it first came out, and my copy growing up was a cherished but EXTREMELY well-worn Yearbook #1. I must have re-read that a hundred times.
The fact of it being a self-contained story not dependent on continuity (by necessity since it was the first issue) helps it stand apart. Almost every character had a moment of their own in there (Short-Fuze and Grand Slam were a bit gypped). How many kids ran straight to the store with their allowance after reading this issue in the hope that Rock n' Roll and the R.A.M. would be available on the rack? I love the tone of plausible high-tech military, with only traces of sci-fi. Great job introducing Cobra. Baroness is an appropriate cross between Lady Hydra and Bernadine Dohrn. |

This is the first G. I. Joe comic I have ever read so please take it easy on me! I'm already hooked. I plan to read each issue twice so I can remember more of the details. These are my notes on Lady Doomsday:
1. The kidnapping of Dr. Burkhart makes me think it's similar to what an American reaction to Hilary Clinton being kidnapped would be like. a. Made decisions based on what she knew at the time. b. Some want her for president, some want to kill her c. She has state secrets d. The world knows we consider her an embarrassment. And yes, I know Hillary is not a doctor. Just felt similar. 2. First issue already compares Cobra Commander as Hitler with the salute of one of his troopers. Last edited by LNSU; 08-29-2016 at 07:49 PM.. Reason: Said 11 and not one |

I really loved the training area too. It makes the team feel real. Plus, it looks like fun.

"Back off or I'll turn her face into a fine red mist!"
"Try to rescue her and she dies!" Hama wasn't afraid to show realistically violent terrorism from issue 1. In the training room, I feel like it would be a lot of fun and kinda relaxing to be in the water. |
