issue 298
Scarlett catches the exfiltration team up on the situation inside, and Rock and Roll admonishes her. In the lab, Snake-Eyes Sean and Snake-Eyes Dawn surrender. The Vipers take their swords and ziptie their wrists together. Mindbender tries to toady to Ghenghis Khan and is rejected. The Vipers try to strap Sean into the brainwave scanner and he leaps into action. Sean smashes the visor of one Viper open, and leaps onto the chest of another who is yelling "No no no no" instead of firing his weapon. Mindbender asks Khan to help them and he's all like "nope, I already did that once, now you clean this mess up" and strolls regally out the door. Toxo-Viper gas everybody. Humorously, a single unconscious Alley Viper is seen laying on the hallway floor here. He is naked from the waist down, indicating that Ghenghis Khan assaulted him and took the pants he is now wearing from him. The cavalry is now one hour away in the C-130. They are doing a weapons-ready test, when Multo suddenly reveals a stowaway Storm Shadow hiding in the latrine. Tommy has come to help out with this off-the-books mission. At the Cobra Island pier, Wade Collins has arrived. He is casually walking down the ramp when the Techno-Viper identify him. It is an unknown Fred series Siegie. They acknowledge that the identification records of the Fred series have been lost, and he is acknowledges as an unknown possible threat. Flagged for a security search, Viper at the entry point pull him aside. He pleasantly agrees and opens his luggage, revealing his Siegie uniform. Wade explains that he is on vacation and really wants to relax. The Vipers are stumped. They basically have no reason to hold this fellow Cobra, and wave him through security. In the jungle, Scarlett and the exfil team get notice from Duke that the cavalry is nearing. They set out to secure the LZ. The Commander is ordering everyone around him to give him a report, including a curiously blond poker dealer who doesn't look like a Blue Ninja fembot. Alpha 001 spies from a camera in the casino as Ghenghis Khan knocks Cobra Commander down and strolls over him. Some AA battery Imps launch missiles at the C-130 as Ghostrider shoots down two Mamba copters. The Asps and Imps rerack and reload. Despite being converted to AA duty, the Imp missiles still look like mine-layers. The exfil team opens fire and clears out the last of the Cobra defensive forces at the airfield. The C-130 comes in for a landing. The Whale is just offshore with Cutter, Deep-Six and Shipwreck. They move to enter the fray. Ghenghis Khan sees a Serpentor armor display, of all things, on the casino floor behind glass. So he smashes the glass. The Commander is offended. Having been gassed unconscious, Sean is loaded into the brainwave scanner. Laura whispers to him that she will rescue him when the moment is right. Dawn is being led away to a cell. Ghenghis Khan makes a dramatic entrance, garbed as Serpentor and dragging The Commander behind him. "There are going to be some changes around here."

issue 299
Ghenghis Khan strolls into Mindbender's lab pulling The Commander along by his cape. The Cobras in the room, including Laura and Mindbender himself, look shocked. Mindbender begs for approval and supplicates himself to Khan. Khan approves of this groveling and demands more cloned troops. Then, he orders the Alley Vipers to drag The Commander away to the island's jail. The Techno-Viper reports that the Joes are advancing from the airport. Genghis Khan demands a tactical firedrill, to allow the Vipers to round up the civilians as hostages in a defensive ring outside. Mindbender, now alone with Laura, celebrates that he will no longer have oversight from The Commander. Laura takes advantage of the situation to free Snake-Eyes Sean and get him out of the lab. At the airfield, Duke and Scarlett assess the situation as the C-130 is unloaded. Muskrat, Long-Range, Multo, Stalker, Storm Shadow, Jinx, Helix, Rock and Roll, Gung Ho, and Roadblock are all loaded up and ready. The vehicles roll out. Storm Shadow and Scarlett get into a chat about solidarity between the Arashikage. In the jail, Cobra Commander is unceremoniously thrown in with Snake-Eyes Dawn. She greets him respectfully and inquires about the coup. The crowd outside of civilian hostages is thick, and Alley Vipers with regular Vipers are keeping them in place. The Joes debate planning as Duke realizes that it is Genghis Khan in charge, then Scarlett observes that Tommy has taken her radio and dipped into the forest by himself. Laura and Sean are escaping through the woods when they casually scroll into ten Vipers at a waterfall. The Techno-Viper arrives again to untie Mindbender. Mindbender declares "I have backup plans for my backup plans!" as they scroll to another adjoining room. This is how we know he is improvising. Here, he pulls a uniformed and armed frozen body dressed as Snake-Eyes in commando gear out of a corpse locker. He explains that Cobra Commander wouldn't let him release his Snake-Eyes clone because he was afraid it would not be able to be controlled. (It won't.) The Techno-Viper aids him in placing the clone into a tank to activate him. The Joes have retreated and are allowing Tommy to do the work. They will hang back as a retrieval party. The C-130 has left the island with all the heavy armor. Likewise, the salty sea dogs make a declaration that they also will forever wait offshore! In the holding cell, Cobra Commander and Snake-Eyes Dawn discuss their situation. He mildly complains about the circumstances and how he dislikes just laying around. She plans the idea of using his helmet explosives to bust out. It is not made clear whether or not he recognizes her as the 15-year-old kid he used to employ as a bodyguard or whether or not our octogenarian woke writer himself remembers that plotline from a few years ago. In the forest, Sean and Laura are reunited with Tommy and Wade Collins. I appreciate Wade's casual interest in Laura, "so, boy, you dating a Siegie, huh? That's my boy!" Back in the lab, again, Genghis Khan is happy enough with driving the Joes off the island that he goes to Mindbender to talk about making some wacky weapons. Essentially "I know we are in the middle of an invasion and coup, so let's take the time to tell me what you got cooking." He seems completely unaware or unconcerned about the Snake-Eyes in a jar, and the Techno-Viper excuses Mindbender and says "I got this, boss." Mindbender reveals a gigantic bomb which brainwashes everyone within range of the detonation. This is likely "Project Cerebral Laundry" which The Commander called "Sleeping Laundry" from issue #293 which we all forgot about. Tommy, Wade, Sean, and Laura are all in a firefight with the pursuing Cobra army. Tommy is making the rounds on the fringes to execute anyone sneaking up on them. Wade is shot, it is a bad one. Tommy declares that he won't leave Wade behind again but Wade gives him orders to get Sean and Laura out of there. Wade is planning to be the tail resistance as he dies. Wade makes a compelling speech, and this scene elevates this issue to a higher level of narrative relevance in the series. Storm Shadow agrees with Wade that Laura and Sean need to leave, but he vows to stay behind himself with Wade and get him off the island. In the lab within the casino, the Snake-Eyes clone bursts first from his tube. See, that wasn't so hard. It took Serpentor one issue to be hatched, it took Fake-Eyes half an issue... what's up with Genghis Khan taking five issues to get free? Anyway, we have a Snake-Eyes again for all you readers who didn't like getting away from the status quo.

The cover! Holy shit man. I intentionally chose to put the worst cover on the issue reveal above so we could talk about it.
This cover makes Cobra Commander look like the lamest fool ever. Like he is on the inside the actual child-like fool that we are afraid he might be due to his exterior actions. The cartoon drawings of individual Joes reduce his understanding of the world to that of incredible shallowness. Coupled with a "plan number" in the upper corner, this is an incredibly significant revelation. This cover reveals Cobra Commander as having no plan. As having no idea of his role in the world. No longer is Cobra Commander's ability to be successful or to have any threat even real. His relevance is minimized simply because the writer of the story is an ailing man without a plan and with failing memory. Now it has been revealed that the joke is on us. The joke is on the reader. Talking Joes podcast noted they believe this will be a "small minority of people’s favorite cover ever because it is so oddball, and several people’s least favorite cover ever because this is an anti-cover." (I believe I quoted that faithfully). This cover has to be taken seriously. It can't be disregarded as a gag or as a parody. Having SL Gallant draw this makes this cover so that the read must take it seriously. While I've been buying the connecting covers due to my friendship with Jamie Sullivan, we must observe that SL Gallant has had a series of covers during this story arc which actually DID portray what was happening inside the issue. He has been portraying faithfully these events. He made me love the little yellow cart. SL Gallant is one of my favorite GiJoe artists. This criticism has nothing to do with his art. If the doodles had been replaced with something else, anything else, this might have been a "Top 10" cover. The idea of seeing Cobra Commander creating a new concept or even just dispatching a squad of troops out of the Casino and into the jungle might have been fascinating. The reality is that this supposed villain is actually just a hapless, confused fool. His reality is intentionally written to be what we readers were afraid a poor writer would bring it down to. Worse yet, the revelation that he has been secretly obsessed with Baroness and weirdly observant of Mindbender's nipples is an incredible truth. This cover once and for all reduces the Commander to a pop cultural state of absolute nonsense. This cover lowers the bar for the entire ARAH title potentially forever, because now the reader will never be able to see The Commander as a serious threat or even a thinking human adult again.
