Spotlight: "Newbies" Cutter and Shipwreck are escorting a recon team to Cobra Island on the Whale. Outback leads Mongoose, Multo, and Sherlock with Black Hat into Cobra Island. Outback explains how regularly the island's geography shifts. A Cobra Moray and a Mamba are actively patrolling the waters near the recon raft. The Joes are hiding under a black tarp covering the raft. The Whale team lights a flare to create a diversion for the Mamba. Black Hat is notable for her black hat. The recon team makes it to shore without being spotted, then deflates the raft and heads inland. Black Hat updates the Pit then they break into two recon teams. Multo and Sherlock, then Outback with Black Hat and Mongoose. Jump forward to daylight, the next day. Mindbender leads Laura 343 on a tour of the new Casino. The construction BATs from the Overkill issue appear again, this is their purpose. They also are deconstructing the original HQ. Mindbender has built a new workshop complete with cloning tanks. Laura is healing from the secret tunnel explosion in Snake Hunt. At the port, Sherlock and Multo witness the container carrying the original brainwave scanner as it is airlifted. Outback's team watches it land at the airport. Multo explains the security on the site. He shares a resentment he has been nurturing since he was five. That night the team has recombined and are planning to insert Black Hat to hack Mindbender's mainframe. The Joes target a Steel Crusher jeep and ambush the Night Vipers aboard it. Black Hat is escorted by Mongoose and Multo into the facility, all dressed as Vipers or Night Vipers. Black Hat hacks the computer system. She shares a resentment she has been nurturing since she was in junior high. Mindbender corners them all, they bluff their way out. He gets ready to set up the old scanner and connect it to the new one. Black Hat reveals that she has all the data, but she didn't get the data off the old scanner since it just arrived. That means the Joes don't have the backup of Snake-Eyes memories from issue 10. In the letters page is a tribute to late Hasbro employee Robert Prupis who was instrumental in the creation of GiJoe and Transformers at Hasbro. The tribute is written by Larry's continuity assistant Diana Davis.

Yeah, I agree. It felt iconic. That could have very easily gone wrong.

Wow! That cover is awesome! The 11yr old in me nostalgia of the movie hit me right there. My comic series ended at the marvel line, I never picked up any of the new issues. I guess I should look for the digital versions.

I miss being reminded of the story in an issue by the cover.

Spotlight: Lt. Falcon Young Vincent tours a military museum. We learn that his father was a green beret in Vietnam but has passed away from the affects of agent orange. The tour guide gives him some advice about entering the program slowly and joining through a university ROTC program. Years later, Falcone is being sent in to a border dispute between Wolkekuckkuckland and Borovia. Three soldiers are prisoner. The brass are taking about using him on "that other deal" if he is able to fulfill this mission. I assume they mean the GiJoe team. Hama wrings his hands about "Right-Wing 'Fascist' militias," his favorite boogieman (take a drink). Brown, Lavigne, and Barkdale are about to be escorted to their executions. This is Law, with Order (who also is to be shot), Fastdraw (a huge nostalgia trip for me), and some other chap. Say, a redshirt. During their afternoon of digging their own graves, Barkdale mouths off and gets killed. Soon, the remaining two are on their knees awaiting execution. Falcon appears from the jungle, slitting one man's throat. The second man receives that same knife to the throat, thrown from some distance. Falcon blasts the third man with his shotgun, and Fastdraw smashes him with a shovel. It took Falcon a little while to get there because of the nearly impassable swamp, but he used the recovery tools on the ATV to get out of several sinkholes on the way. The militia has realized what happened. They pursue in a Hind helicopter. The (future) Joes are stuck in a mudhole but maneuver the vehicle loose. Both the rescuees are admonishing Lt. Falcon with praise. The Hind appears and begins an attack. Falcon directs Fastdraw to a stinger rocket stowed in the back. Fastdraw smarts off about his codename from his time in an armored division (the same armored division as Bazooka?) then shoots the helicopter down. There is a firefight, and Falcon is shot in the shoulder. Several of them go down, and Falcon has disappeared into the muck. As a soldier draws aim on Law, Falcon reappears out of the surface and shoots him down. Another threatens to shoot Law if Falcon moves, but Order takes that man down. Out of danger, these three are resting the next day in a camp hut. The men who sent Falcon in approach them, and offer to have them all transferred onto the GiJoe team. I believe these are General Malthus and Senator Hegel from back in the day. In the letters page there isn't anything.

I think the reason IDW has gotten good about having covers related to the contents of the story - in a vague sense - is because they are able to pin down the contents in advance with these character-specific one-shots. "It's a Falcon issue, okay get me some Falcon covers!" is easier than being specific about which three character will be on which vehicle and who they are fighting with the right background.
IDW used to be even less specific a lot of the time, so this is an improvement. I think behind the scenes they have a hard time getting plot details, managing freelancers (rather than in-house artists), and that the timeline is a lot different than it used to be. But also, there probably isn't a sense of urgency to make changes to the routine, as a guess. You're right though. The old way was better and your point still stands. It's not just the enjoyment of knowing the story inside before you open it because of familiar imagery which is pleasing. Also for the first time reader there is more sense of anticipation overall.
