This is another mid-level first year issue. Marginally better than the last one. The notable thing is of course Snakes spilling the beans. Not surprised Hama didn't use this particular gimmick again before the last issue. The title is still finding its way. Seeing things develop organically is a big part of the charm of the original issues (like the previously mentioned Stalker/Flash moment from last issue). This is something they can never reproduce in the myriad of reboots, where they just immediately jump in with all the big characters and storylines. Can't believe DDP milked the crap out of a forgettable fill-in villain like Wingfield. Seriously, why? I dare you to find a more ridiculous and unnecessary resurrection in all of comics. And meanwhile they forgot to publish the miniseries where they explain the origin of the mysterious Stalker-clone Ranger!

I had issues with number 4 mainly because I was pretty familiar with Montana. That was kinda cool but I wanted Joes and Cobras as a kid. So to see the Joes go up against a homegrown terrorist was way before its time. The militia did not become popular until about the nineties in mainstream media.
What was very real about the issue was the threat of a nuclear attack. If you lived through the early eighties nuclear annihilation was a very real thing and at the forefront of the news. Newspapers covered the average blast zone and drills were held regularly at schools across the nation. I did not want a Wingfield story back then though I wanted a GIJOE vs Cobra story. I think that is why I was not too keen on issue 2, 4, 9, and most of the Sierra Gordo run of the first twenty issues.

I seem to recall seeing somewhere that Hasbro wasn't introducing "bad guy" figures, so there may have been some top-down influence to diversify the threat. The story at least showed a bit of Joe diversity in job (they weren't exclusively an anti-Cobra force). Also amusing to see the low regard for the US Army at that time.

I like the idea of keeping Cobra's involvement in the early issues down. By using other terrorist groups, it keeps Cobra from being watered down by being used (and defeated) every issue. As the series went on, it became easier to use Cobra as their ranks expanded (and more toys were released).
I always found this issue to be interesting, mainly because it's one of the few times Snake Eyes's thoughts are displayed on the page. I always laughed at his description of Hawk and Grunt's futile attempt to not outclass the other trainees. |

This issue makes for a good read. The break from Cobra doesn't bother me it kind of diversifies what the Joes jobs were. I mean Cobra can't always be the biggest threat. Its a good stand alone to just pick up and read. I like alot of the early issues for this reason.

So, I've decided to use this readthrough as a platform for doing some data-type stuff as I'm playing with some software that I want to learn how to use better. I've gotten through the first couple iterations of the thing and have a functioning workflow, and I wanted to share some of this with you, as I can now update it very easily each issue, and it will grow increasingly interesting as time goes on.
The thing I'm using is a graph database, which is essentially like a big network diagram where you can store whatever data is needed in a schemaless, as-needed way. I'm taking some structured tabular data that I'm filling in a piece at a time, and using it to build a model of the 'universe', from the ground up. Right now, I have it tracking characters as they show up, locations, and vehicles, and then (by issue), showing the 'level of involvement' of each entity. tl;dr: I'm making a new database, and the subject is the Hamaverse. It's going to be wicked cool. Check out these screenshots, of where we stand at issues 3 and 4. Neat, eh? This can lead to some really cool visualizations down the line.
