I did like this issue. Yes it does stretch the suspension of disbelief a lot but it was fun as it should be. Larry is still finding his groove. Like watching the first season of a long running show. Those episodes seem different or not as good then later seasons do. It takes awhile to flesh things out and find what works. Remember toy comics only ever lasted a year according to Marvel.
Like already mentioned it's nice to see the Joes in the Pit interacting together. We get a little bit more about each of the orginal 13 with each issue. It helps us go beyond just what is on the file card. We see Cobra Commander again and he his not an idiot or buffoon. |

That's a really good way to look at it...ongoing stories usually have an initial run of things that were already in the queue, so to speak, when the series starts...it's only after the initial batch of ideas that the 'groove' hits. Larry has stated many times that he was just making it up month to month, so it will be something to watch for in the coming issues: Can we sort of separate the stories into things (like #3) that are these standalone type deals which don't quite 'fit' and were likely backlog stories.
Obviously #1 was planned as a #1, and #2 feels like the series does later on, especially since it's technically the start of the longest-running plot. #3 however, doesn't really have much of a place in the continuity, primarily since the robot is more sophisticated than the BATs by a long shot but it's never mentioned again. But...#3 would make a great Fury Force issue. No big deal at that time to say that Hydra had a robot...so my gut says that this story was already in Larry's VisiCalc spreadsheet when he did the find-and-replace of the name 'Fury Force'.

• The thing I'm really enjoying about reading these comics is the suspense I'm feeling in each scene…never knowing how the Joes will solve this weeks dilemma.
• Cobra Commander is quite clever. Having the redundant forms of the robot are so keen! The final stage reminded me of Stargate SG-1's villain the replicators. I know these were only mechanical bugs but with all the tech in this alternate world we don't know what Cobra may have equipped them with if the Joes hadn't smashed them so quickly. • Lastly, these stores are inspiring me to want to play with the figures. I'm feeling so much inspiration from these stories. |

Issue 3 was another one they never published in Finland. Not much of a loss, really. Definitely one of the weaker first year stories. Can't even think of anything to say about it. The Pit was a cool base. Funny in retrospect how Flash is the one explaining SEs motivation to Stalker. On a different point, the whole notion of Snake Eyes not trusting his peers - all a bunch of strac elite troops - to clean their weapons properly is a telling statement about overall levels of discipline and training in the US Army in the early '80's. |

The cover. Spider-Man Snake-Eyes, Red Sonja haired Scarlett, Hawk wearing his trademark beret that he would never wear again until Rise of Cobra. Bushy beard Rock'N Roll like Buzzer's disguise in a later issue. Stalker shooting Snake-Eyes in the back.
The story. I remember being disappointed Cobra wasn't in the issue. This one seems ahead of the post-Oklahoma City bombing era when militias appeared as villains in every type of media possible. Of course those groups existed then, but they weren't in the limelight. |

Stalker is an excellent shot. He's probably shooting around Snake Eyes between the other Joes. Remember these guys are elite! Last edited by Mainframe77; 09-19-2016 at 12:02 PM.. |

Inventory stories are the same thing - they'd use them as "fill-in" issues if the creative team missed a deadline.

First of all, I do think at first that Quinn is a bit of a jerk, but throughout the issue, he becomes less so. This is also the first appearance of fear waves, which I found interesting. More on this as it develops. I like how Quinn has honor and once the contract is completed, he lets the Joes mop up. Good issue. I have yet to read 3 and 4

I really liked this one-off. Snake-Eyes notes are a great way for him to communicate his thoughts. It was where I first learned about militias, of course I was only 7 at the time. I thought it was weird that Hawk went on this mission rather than someone else.
