Before I comment on the story itself, here is my issue #3 story. In 2008, I went to the Baltimore Comic-con with a friend. I was a casual, on again - off again comic fan. I read Joe, Star Wars, Further Adventures of Indiana Jones as a kid. Not much super hero stuff. So at this comic-con, I really did understand who any of these artists were. Until I saw Jim Shooter sitting at a booth with no one around him. I remembered the Shooter in Issue #1 and that he was named for Jim Shooter who was editor in chief at the time. So I wanted to buy a Joe comic for him to sign on the cheap. I found a Marvel Joe #3 at a booth and bought it. I took it to Mr Shooter and reminded him of the 'Shooter' in issue #1. I recall him saying something like that was 'Larry being Larry'. Although another tanker pointed out that maybe that was from the penciled or inker. Mr Shooter was very nice and agreed to sign my newly purchased comic. I then realized that it had something stamped on the cover, ' Not To Be Sold'. I expressed to him that I didn't see that when I bought it and wished I had. He then told me that that meant it was a Marvel in house copy. He said the company was for some reason paranoid staffers would sell their copies that they stamped them. That made me feel better about my purchase. As he looked at the comic, he said 'You should have Herb sign this, he is here.' I had know idea who Herb Trimpe was at the time but I said great idea, thanked Mr Shooter for his contribution and went on to find Mr Trimpe. I found Herb Trimpe and proceeded to wait about 45 mins in line for him. Not because he had a long line but because one dude had like a 100 things for him to sign and proceeded to talk to him as well for too long based on the fact others were waiting. But I digress. While waiting I noticed Mr Trimpe was selling some of his original works from the Further Adventures of Indiana Jones: So I proceeded to buy a piece and have him sign that to my then 2 year old son Jacob and also sign the Joe #3 that Mr Shooter signed. I also learned about Mr Trimpe that day. He was famous for Hulk but was the first person to draw Wolverine in a comic. Cool dude. Very sorry to hear that he had passed a year or so ago. So now I will read my Marvel house copy of Joe #3 signed by Shooter and Trimpe. I will comment on the comic tomorrow. Thanks for letting me tell my tale. I'll attached the pics of my two purchases.

Always loved the comment about whatever Snake Eyes carried in his boot shouldn't be legal.

That's a neat story Mainframe77!
As with some others, this one didn't do it for me. It seems like this marked a point when no one was quite sure where to take the story: realistic? sci-fi? comedic? It ended up falling short on all fronts, though it was an opportunity to explore the different characters - something the early issues did better than later issues. I hadn't considered this a preview of the BATs. Robots seemed "in" enough without that kind of foreshadowing. If any issue foreshadowed the BATs it was issue 27, though those robots were Zartan's project . . . Anyway, not one of my favourites. |

I loved number three when I read it for the first time. When the little spider robots scattered out of the giant robot head... my mind was absolutely blown.
Was bringing the robot into your secret base triggering an obvious trap. Of course it was... that's what heroes do! It was already mentioned once, but the dichotomy of all of the chaos breaking loose downstairs and the lack of care for Scarlett when smooshing the last spider robot was spectacular. I have always loved when writers give you a glimpse of your heroes at play. Claremont and his Xmen, Hama and his Joes, Even the recent Avenger Movies still make me tingle. Like I'm being let in on some big secret... A free backstage pass kind of thing. The concept of the pit from this issue had me drawing underground and mountain bunkers for a very long time after. When I got old my house is going to look like THIS Mommy. |

Issue #3 does broaden the tone/style and possibilities of G.I. Joe.
Issue #1 is a perfect introduction of all the characters and both factions, with a single targeted plot by Cobra. #2 is a more realistic portrayal of a smaller group of characters without much about Cobra, and a memorable new type of adversary. #3 is neat in that it starts in the middle of the action, suggesting a continuously ongoing Joe/Cobra conflict. The giant robot and tea party are both a little campy, but it's a great way to ground the Joes in their own environment, which we haven't seen very much of until this issue... By the time we get to a two-parter about the Oktober Guard, we're opened up to possibilities of storytelling that is not just one-offs. We've seen another way Cobra manipulates the Joes. And we meet and ally with the Oktober Guard, the Soviet counterparts to Joe, in the middle of the Cold War, which was on all our minds in the real world... I think the comic series really gets going with the introduction of Dr. Venom in issue #10, but it's awesome to reflect on how the answer to "What is 'G.I. Joe?'" unfolded and expanded, and drew us kids into the fantasy. Last edited by Stalker; 09-15-2016 at 06:41 PM.. |

First question.. Is that Hawk or Grunt on the cover at the bottom? Visor plus a gun that looks like the love child of an AK-47 and M-16. |

1) "Peace Through War" ... What a great slogan.
2) "Zap.. Your're about as funny as a chest wound" ... I'd like to use that line sometimes 3) I love the panel of Clutch flipping the eggs. He looks very at home in the kitchen. Maybe he missed his calling.. Primary MOS: Chef. I like his hair and how his beard goes from full to just 5 o'clock shadow 4) Stupid Robot.. Fell for the old aluminum foil over the hydraulic pit trick. Oldest trick in the book. 5) I read the original issue and on the back cover is an ad for "MegaForce" movie. "Deeds not Words". Classic so cheesy it's good movie from childhood. Only $1 to join the Fan club. Ace Hunter is pointing at me. |
