So I started a new thread for discussion to avoid contaminating the other threads with spoilers.
So I read this over my lunch hour and my review is as follows: This is good. Like I said in my earlier post, it's not great and it was never going to be, just because of the nature of the story that they are trying to tell. But it is a lot of fun. The SF side of the story always had a sort of bizarre slapstick quality, and the Joes match that with a sort of Saturday-morning-cartoon sensibility that complements it well. This is clearly not the kind of material that would benefit from a very realistic take. The fights are short but well-written. I suppose doing two 99-second rounds for each fight would have taken up the entire comic and been kind of boring, so most of these fights are 3-4 pages long. Maybe later issues will have longer fights as the tournament gets whittled down. The writers have always said that their goal was to make sure each fight told a story with its own beginning, middle, and end, and in that they succeeded very well. My biggest criticism, having read the entire issue, is the scene where Roadblock tries to shoot Hakan with an M2. This was the kind of thing you might see in Capcom vs. SF where the characters pull weapons out of hammerspace, combined with the usual fighting game trope where weapons batter the health meter but don't actually hurt anyone. My problem with it was trying to separate the video game logic from my real-world understanding of what an M2 does to a person. Roadblock just tried to liquefy a human being, and I'm not okay with that. If it was Mortal Kombat, or if we were talking about a villainous character, I might be more accepting of it, but that is a seriously fucked up thing for a "good guy" character to do to a person. I hope they reign it in a little in future issues. The one big surprise that came out of this issue was Ryu throwing the match. I'll be the first to admit that when I saw the lineup pitting Ryu against Jinx, I thought, "Well, that'll be a short fight." As much as I like Jinx, her entire backstory is that she is a novice. Ryu and Snake Eyes are the most skilled fighters in their respective canons, so it would be easy to assume they will both go undefeated until they fight each other late in the tournament. By having Ryu find a reason to throw the match, the writers have successfully shaken up the storyline while still maintaining Ryu's status as a skilled fighter. I also enjoyed the panel where Jinx uses the Shoryuken Dragon Punch. Things like that are what make crossovers so much fun. I'm looking forward to the Storm Shadow vs. Croc Master matchup. I've always liked Croc Master and I've always wanted to see more of him. I'm still rooting for Storm Shadow, though, because he is my favorite character. I'm curious to see which side SS is on in this version of the Joe-verse. I'm also wondering if we will see a Storm Shadow vs. Snake Eyes fight. It's kind of obligatory for a Joe story, but it's also been done so many times before that it would be too predictable. Since the writers have already demonstrated a willingness to shake things up (by giving Ryu a first-round loss), I would bet they eliminate SS specifically to avoid a SS vs. SE fight, or at least try to put an unexpected spin on it. My last complaint is one that I doubt many will agree with. I grew up on SF2, so I'm not familiar with any of the (totally inferior) games released after 1994. A lot of these characters appear to be from SFIV, which is a smart marketing move for the younger crowd but kind of lost on me. When I look at characters like Hakan, I'm like, "Who the heck is this dork?" The backstory of the matches that talked about fights like Roadblock vs. Zangief made me cry a little inside, because that would be awesome. Last edited by solosam; 02-24-2016 at 06:26 PM.. |

Some dialogue was funny (loved Rufus); other was very clunky and cliche (e.g., Crimson Viper). Don't know that I could do better, though. Ha.
Question: not sure why the Joes are here. Are they kidnapped? Invited? (If so, how legal is that?) They're obviously in a country where they can't arrest Bison or Destro, both of whom - one assumes - are wanted by international law. Roadblock mysteriously pulling an M-50 heavy machine gun out and unloading in a room full of spectators (you can see them in several background shots) mystified me. His look of maniacal glee made it worse. Was he trying to kill Hakan or just scare him? Either way, it was almost a "jump the shark" scenario. However, when Hakan and he made up afterwards, it more than made up for it and gave me a genuine chuckle. Final thoughts: I'm really glad to have G.I. Joe continuing, in any format, and look forward to more of these cross-overs. The two franchises are - not surprisingly - a great fit. I would really have liked to have seen Snake-Eyes actually smear Vega, the so-called "Spanish Ninja", though. Plus, due to their mystic natures, Spirit vs. Dhalsim is a no-brainer imho. Hopefully there's a soon-to-be sequel. |

I wonder why Big Boa wasn't used. He would've been perfect for this series.

Yeah, I'm trying not to concern myself too much with their choice of characters. I think the fact that the writer worked on WWF (or whatever acronym they are using) has a lot to do with why we are seeing tough guys like Roadblock, Gung-Ho, and Croc Master. They fit that bodybuilder look, but aren't in any way "martial artists" like Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow. Why Big Boa was left out is just baffling to me... If you are going for WWF type characters, he fits in perfectly. Last edited by solosam; 02-27-2016 at 01:23 AM.. |

so your reviews sold me on trying it out... the $5 price tag kept getting in the way anytime i glanced at it.... it was a lot of fun. very classic ARAH Joes (which are the only Joes I find I enjoy reading about) The art is really nice, so it makes for a book that you can read a few times and still enjoy- and the 'mystery weapon' powered by fighting is a great hook- that's how you get the Joes involved, by Destro offering to sell the weapon only to the tournament winner. Joes want it, Cobra wants it... everyone else just wants to be crowned the champ! I'm wondering if the Joes will be revealed to be using rubber bullets or something... not a big deal to me but it sounds like some were put off by 'Block unloading like that...
looking forward to the next issue... |

looking forward to the next issue... And thanks for clearing up why the Joes are there. I'm still murky on the legal aspect of U.S. soldiers joining an event hosted by a terrorist and an illegal weapons manufacturer, but there has to be some suspension of disbelief in most comic formats. |

Oh, is anyone else besides me wondering if this is the real Snake-Eyes, or the "Fake-Eyes clone"? I'm opting for the original, the one-and-only in my book...

RB unloads his Ma Deuce and no one gets hit? Unlikely, he probably did that to intimidate his opponent and let him know he could take him out whenever he wanted to.

I take SF v G.I.Joe to be it's own continuity outside anything happening elsewhere- so for me there is only one Snake-Eyes! I guess if a later issue says otherwise I'll have to accept it- but this feels like G.I.Joe without the new comics continuity... just G.I.Joes as the characters I think of them as without knowing them beyond the vintage toyline, comic, and cartoon...
