The IDWverse is an exercise in of the fact that change isn't always the best thing.
I get that the concept is to hire a creative team start with a new #1 there by generating a buzz and sales and the supposed 'Jumping On Point' for new readers and once the sales start tapering off to bring in a new creative team and repeat the process. But the kicker here is with ever turn over the book hasn't been very good. I really think the last time the book generated any buzz was when Cobra Commander was killed, and a new one was selected. After that? Honestly I can't even recall most of the stories. They took over a country went public and bombed the hell out of it. After that the Joes went public with a black ops branch working in the shadows (and that version people hated) and the recent 'Fall of G.I. Joe' story was so dry and boring I found myself thumbing through issues instead of reading them. In both the last two incarnations of the book I don't think either writer had a clue as to who the characters are. The same issue happened in the DDP books when Joe Casey took over...great writer love his work on many other books, but the man had no idea how to write for G.I. Joe. And I think that's what happened with Fred Van Lente and Karen Traviss they both clearly can spin a tale...just not a G.I. Joe tale. Personally I would like to see IDW grab Brandon Jerwa again. His stories from DDP's Frontline and his short (but highly altered) DDP main book run were pretty good. He showed he had the chops for the book. |
