Yeah, while GIJoe Cobra is good in a "solid" way, the layouts are classic and clean, the art is realistic, dark, and "gritty," I see it as too easy... This is the Joe we would have all come up with if tasked with doing a "The Wire" version of Joe.
The thing is, everything is like that, these days, from Jason Bourne, to James Bond, to Daredevil. It is much harder to capture the mad insanity of Joe from the 80's, in the spirit that we used to play with our toys. That's what I like to do with my dios, rather than just "good" storytelling. And that's what Transformers Vs Joe does expertly, IMO. Maybe that's why they're doing better with Transformers over at IDW. They maybe "get it" better. With the Joe titles, I see a lot of different approaches, all in the spirit of different identities and concepts of Joe. JoeCobra is so appreciated because it is grounded and darkly violent, but that's not the best of Joe for me, it is a shade of Joe that works well because it is harder to poke holes in stories the more "realistic" they are. But there's a lot of "joy" in Joe which is better captured in Transformers Vs Joe. |

I just read through the main title of the beginning of Dixon's run. I like that more.
In storytelling, you are never going to get the efficacy of a single protagonist with multiple protagonists. That's part of why Chuckles' story works well. However, I prefer the team concept. The Sunbow show did a great job of reorienting you to a different protagonist in each scene, even throughout a single episode. Dixon's take is both expansive and classic. I was thinking about full-page panels last night, comparing bearded Chuckles in his prison cell with an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, saying, "Jinx," when he sees Chameleon. Comparing that to the full-page in Transformers v Joe where Cobra Commander blows Snake-Eyes' face off. I know which panel delighted the inner me, and which one had me going, "Good grief." Your mileage may vary. |

I'm definitely a big fan of the more realistic approach to telling stories about the Joes. The little details go a long way in making the stories more grounded and approachable, and I think it's the right take on the subject matter considering a lot of people that grew up with the cartoon are now actual vets themselves. It might not attract a lot of younger readers but I think comics like the Cobra Files were some of the most exciting funnybooks to hit the stand. It was a great balance between fantasy and real world espionage and shadow games. I think with the cartoon a lot of us were very, very naive about how the military and special forces worked. Now there is more of a gear towards realistic story telling because we are more culturally aware of how gritty and nerve wracking real modern warfare can be. Maybe blame Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty for it, but I don't want them to shy away from that stuff to make things more "light and fun". I think if anything it should keep this grounded, make the Joes truly resemble real special ops teams. It should inspire more people to try to be in special operations.

But that's the problem: G.I. Joe was created to be fun. That other stuff was created to be "dark and gritty". So far, trying to make G.I. Joe into a "shades of gray" morality comic (no, I'm not talking about the stupid movie of the same name) where there is little difference between the good guys and bad guys hasn't work for very long before sales plummeted.
