Part of my childhood died the day I read those panels. It didn't help that it was the last issue of the Marvel UK weekly Action Force comic.

OK wanted to keep my opinion open until I actually read the issue.
I have to say the story as been becoming progressively stranger and stranger since...well the Blue Ninjas really. Cyborgs, Alien Eye in the desert, Giant Robot weapons...but in all of that I can honestly say its not unprecedented. G.I. Joe has reached beyond being just a military comic book long ago. The Blue Ninjas are hardly the first Cyborgs...we all easily accepted Billy with cybernetic parts. And while he never appeared in comics or cartoon we did have Robo Joe. So Cyborg Blue Ninjas isn't awful. Giant Robot weapons? Ok...yeah its a little out there, but again not unprecedented we did have Star Brigade using a giant robot...and Cobra has had various size robots for awhile...plus the ARAH series crossed over twice into Transformers so its not that weird. Large alien eye in the desert under the Pit...ok that's just weird but G.I. Joe has rarely shied away from weird. Characters have been cloned, brought back from the dead, controlled via dental implants, mind reprogramming, revolutionary White Clowns with Midgets.......so this is a little more beyond the normal for Joe's normal weirdness but its not an uninteresting story. The elephant in the room...the Death of Snake Eyes. Well...lets start with Serpentor's telekinesis...yeah I actually have no issues with this...I mean how do you bring Serpentor back and make him even more of a bad ass? Telekinesis. Yeah that is actually kinda cool. Now as for Snake's death...I actually don't mind it so much. I mean essentially he gives his life to save people and stop an enemy...that's pretty much what we expect from Snake Eyes. Sean Collins takes up the mantle...I think this might be my biggest issue. I don't think anyone complained that Collins would follow in SE's steps. From his letter to SE issue to the DDP version of Sean Kamakura, him joining the Joes and following in Snakes footsteps is a perfectly natural progression of the story. So what's the problem? The timing. We have a guy who has all of the skills and is disfigured just at the time when Snake Eyes needs to be replaced...and even picks up his mask and puts it on moments after he dies. It feels cheap. It felt cheap when Tommy was poised to replace Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th series, or when Roy the Ambulance driver was fake Jason in the same series. It felt lame when 4 different characters adapted the Superman mantle...and again when Batman was replaced with a new Batman. Now I want to make a distinction...there is NOTHING wrong with passing the torch...I like when the Green Lantern mantle is passed on. I think one day Robin taking over Batman is exactly what should happen. Was there anything wrong with the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation taking over from the older cast? Hell no. I think we all kinda know that characters do get stale. Writers do get tired of writing for those characters. And every franchise does need to at some point grow and filter characters in and out and prepare for something grown from the seed planted. In fact one of our major complaints about Joe as fans is the complete repetition of the brand...how many times have we call complained that we're getting Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander and Stormshadow....AGAIN....in the next wave? Or pissed and moaned that its yet ANOTHER reboot of the comic or cartoon or even the film, so I think killing SE isn't such a horrible move....but it was poorly executed in having a standing replacement ready for Snake Eyes. Now why does it suck? It cheapens the character...Snake is supposed to be the best of the best...a one of a kind talent...the final line of defense in the elite Joe Team, BUT he can easily be replaced by anybody who happens to be standing by as long as he's a ninja, and military trained...and burned...and heroic. Just my two cents. |

Just my two cents. In fact as I stated before, I don't think Snake Eyes actually "died". The way the panels played up, it didn't look pivotal nor dramatic, whereas a death of a major character like Snake Eyes of all people, would definitely look pivotal and dramatic! Instead we see him "die" or presumably die off panel, then someone conveniently dons his mask. I was like "that's it?......". Plus I doubt this would be the big send off Hama would write for arguably the character he's most known by. |

There are a couple more issues left in the Death of Snake Eyes series. And my guess is that Hama kills him off for good. We will see body although probably heavily damaged by the grenade. And it looks like we get a funeral.
In comics, there is no such thing as completely dead. Heck, even if Snake Eyes is truly dead, he has been in the brainwave scanner so many times that his brain could be downloaded into a clone body and Snake Eyes 2.0 appears. But Hama has complete control to do whatever he wants very little Hasbro oversight and no IDW editorial oversight. And Joe fans have been asking for a major character death for a long time, I just don't think we were expecting Snake Eyes to be the one. And I seriously hope that this story arc brings back to GI Joe some of the fans that have left. I am pretty sure Joe comics are unlikely to bring in new fans. |

I stopped reading the Joe books a couple years ago. The constant re-boots of the new line of books were stupid. How many GI Joe #1 do we really need. As for RAH. I was excited when Hama was brought back. I followed the first 6 or 7 issues but I found them bland. I don't know if Hama caught magic in a bottle in the 80's, but whatever he once had is gone. Maybe he is overrated?

Outstanding analysis... Well said...
In the back of my mind... When Snake-Eyes was written out of the storyline I've always thought the writers would do a mock killing & later we see him retired somewhere in the mountains other than the High-Sierras. Cobra already knows about that location. Quote:

i think snake eyes finally got bored of hearing everyone mentioning how disfigured he was and he thowt...ok..thats it...i gotta get a face job done...c'mon its 2015 for crying out loud....and especially wen kamakura got disfigured as well??? did he?? really?? dont tell me he lost his voice as well! i've just bought real american heroes tpb vol 11...so i'm majorly lagging behind the storyline here....so snakes fakes his death to get a new face and some much needed r&r.
