How many of us really think Snake Eyes will stay dead?

He'll stay dead, just like the 90 other times he's been killed.

After finishing this issue just now, I will say the death was left wide open to reversal.
I do think though that unless they say they can't find the body, (gruesome I know) What happened, in that contained space, it would be hard not to know for certain. I thought that Sean was going to be the new Arashikage ninja waaay back when Snake Eyes gave him his trench knife. I did not think though that he would don the mask and actually take Snake Eyes place. I thought he would be himself. Will there be a new uniform? Will the Joes just use "Throwdown Snake Eyes" as a diversion to keep Cobra on their toes? Will it be common knowledge amongst everyone in the ARAH universe? Was the transformation that took place alongside the drama of the impending death interesting to you or was it too much.

Just wanted to post up the cover for RAH 215.
It's a cover you just need to own, even if you think the story is a little off. I will say this, if anybody has the right to Kill off Snake Eyes it's Hama but I just hope it stays that way.

I disagree to a point.
I am going to re-read the issue again here shortly. Here is my take on why this happened. Snake Eyes, like so many ARAH characters, had no more story potential. Now though, we have Throwdown SE. Throwdown is a different person entirely and we know his past. Cobra parents, trained Arashikage, connections to the GIJOE team in his teens and now a member. Larry can take the role of Snake Eyes in the Joe team in a new direction, what Snake Eyes might do, could be entirely different than what Throwdown would do. To paraphrase Hama, it is a way to change the game. Now he can start anew with this role of a silent, deadly, highly trained ninja, without completely overturning the GIJOE universe. Many stories can sprout from this event. Will Snake Eyes stay dead? Will he come back like the Baroness, Cobra Commander, Zartan, Firefly, Sneak Peek, well anything is possible. Will we see a new TSE (Throwdown Snake Eyes) uniform? Will we be clamoring for a scarred face Throwdown figure in FSS5?

He won't stay dead because he won't die. Never has, never will.

Mr. Hama once said in a interview years ago (and I'm paraphrasing), that the his whole story of G.I. Joe is the story of Snake-Eyes... I believe that the original Snake-Eyes will return. I suppose that I may feel some affinity/familiarity with "Sean Collins" because of DDP's use of the character, which obviously got some tracktion. Kamakura as had several figures; he was even in Sigma 6! But Hama's "Throwdown" isn't Kamakura. Sean Collins of the Hamaverse is a work of "Traditioned Innovation". He's reaching back into the old continuity and pulling out the name of a child, and suddenly turning him into an adult member of the Joe Team in very short order. And it's not like Sean was even the biological son of Wade Collins. He was the Cobra-cover son of Wade, not even a legal/real adoption.
Part of me wants to like Throwdown because I liked Kamakura. I liked the idea of Wade's sort-of-son working with Snake-Eyes. But Throwdown isn't Kamakura; he's a guy we hardly know showing up and making Snake-Eyes, Stormshadow, and Stalker look really, REALLY old. And I have no reason to believe that Throwdown has any claim to be Snake-Eyes. Not in any way that counts. This feels a lot like the ending of Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy. Does anyone really think the Joseph Gordon Levitt has any business trying to be Batman? It was a fun movie, but that kid's going to get killed in about a week trying to be Batman... Sorry Throwdown, not just any man can pull-off the black pajamas. Throwdown can be a Joe, but the Joe characters aren't "roles" to fill. We don't need a new Snake-Eyes anymore than we would need a new Duke, Roadblock, or Stalker.

We don't need a new Snake-Eyes anymore than we would need a new Duke, Roadblock, or Stalker. Of course, they retconned Vietnam into "Unnamed Southeast Asian Conflict that looks just like Vietnam and has all the same lingo" back during the DDP days, but as far as I'm aware the IDW/Hama-verse hasn't, really. Just one of those silly comic-book things that characters never age. That having been said, while I don't read the comics anymore, it really doesn't sound like Throwdown's transformation was "earned." |
