Mike Costa & Christos Gage wrote stories in the Cobra series that make it the best IDW writing if not the best Joe writing.
First, they told stories and through those stories did things no Joe comic has ever come close to doing. Second, they took C level terrible Cobra characters and actually made them very cool. Examples of the First: Chuckles executes a fellow Joe. A major Joe dies. The story Tomax and Xamot as businessmen. Cobra Special #1 is uniquely written to mirror their stories with unique formatting. The first person story telling of the characters especially Chuckles and Erike Le Tene (later known as Chameleon) Examples of the Second: Chuckles was made cool in the DDP Frontline series, but here he is made a badass, serious character, motivated, driven and almost insane. Tomax & Xamot not as circus but hardcore ruthless businessmen. Crystal Ball as an erratic eccentric psychic Croc Master as a total societal dysfunctional person. Both Chameleons (Erike Le Tene and Chameleon who becomes Ronin) incredibly complex characters. By the way Christos Gage is a Staff writer on the Daredevil Netflix series which is also fantastic |
