I heard how great the IDW Joe was so I picked up a dew issues and I wasn't seeing it. Later I heard about Hama's work but I haven't had a chance to pick any up.
I'd love to get into the IDW Joe comics, but until I can read Hama's stuff I won't call it a complete wash. |

Cobra is a great comic. Very well done, but IMO it may have been partially responsible for the downfall of the IDW verse. Gage and Costas' re-working of Cobra was so different and radical that no other writers could really figure Cobra out in the other IDW verse titles. While the changing of Cobra Commander to a title rather than a person was unique and initially well done it left the IDW verse without a strong Antagonist. I actually typed more, but as this is a thread to get people to read the book I realized heavy spoilers even for this old title should not be here. It's a good book - even it's sequel the Cobra Files (or Cobra vol 3 if you want) is a decent read. But I'll leave it at this - as strong as the drama and the story in Cobra and Cobra II is this story created a hole in the over all IDW verse that I think it never recovered from.

I read the Cobra 1-4, I like it and plan on continuing. I have always been interested in the Cobra civil wars, anyone have any opinions, are they worth a read?

I started the cobra series years ago and never got last 3rd issue. Just was a bit too slow. I think I might give it another try. Been reading the IDW ARAH series for 9.99 per volume in my IDW Comic app on phone . Pretty cool so far. For some reason they don't have Devils Due available and I have never read it so ...that sucks

I don't think anybody can argue what Larry Hama has done for G.I. Joe. I currently read ARAH and this is the book that most fans point out that they are still reading. However I just feel G.I. Joe: Cobra was next level type of writing. The character development and level of sophistication are "Worthy of recognition in the archives of the Jedi Order".
I also understand where you are coming from with the read orders. If you follow the link we provided, a read order for the G.I. Joe: Cobra series is provided and we will continue to do so with every G.I. Joe comic series we focus on. Last edited by Jay West; 04-20-2015 at 11:14 PM.. |

I got back into comics when 155 1/2 kicked off. I had to go back and buy all of the dixon and costa books from 2009 and everything else to get "up-to-date."
I really liked all of the costa and dixon series' and the especially the cobra series, especially the way they portrayed characters like chuckles, serpentor and crystal ball. I have picked up every single gi joe book monthly at my local shop since then. I'm not so big into the recent snake eyes: agent books but I am really really enjoying the fall of gi joe current ongoing series. Yes it's gritty and probably not suitable for kids but I get my fix with the ARAH series on that end. Although I do love seeing old ARAH characters in comics, I like reading fresh stories like the current one. The new gi joe/transformers crossover……? I don't know. I told the shop owner today actually that this has been the dumbest book I have every read. He thought I said dopiest but I quickly corrected him. He asked if I want to cancel him pulling it for me monthly and I told him no because I like flipping through just for the art but I probably won't read another word in them. On a side note, some people mentioned the ddp and image comics. I have all of those runs and I think they are very good as well. Definitely worth reading for any joe fan.

I in no one way think a fan "has to do something" or "has to like something" but I will point out because of the huge fan support for IDW's transformers, the transformers collectors have gotten tons of Hasbro, and third party stuff, based off IDW's comics alone. I could only dream, as a Joe fan, to have that someday as a buying option.

I read it, I hated it.
Too dark and moody. The story and art would have been more fitting for any "noir" detective comics, not G.I.Joe. But I still bought all the comic issues, simply to show my support for the G.I.Joe brand with my wallet, and for what they're trying to do. It's not for me, but I'm sure there are others who enjoyed it. Last edited by cyclopswc; 04-21-2015 at 09:03 AM.. |
