I love the cover. Very classic G.I.Joe
I'm not familiar with the red clad bad guys and am not sure I see the point of them - would rather see more of Cobra. |

As ever, another fantastic issue. Totally impeccable artwork combined with writing that left me on the edge of my seat. Then again, we're dealing with Larry Hama at what feels to be almost at his prime, so no complaints from my end. Not to mention the Red Shadows in action.
Now for the spoiler, so turn away if you have yet to read the issue: ... ... ... ... It was an absolute joy to see Dr. Burkhart (yes, THE Adele Burkhart) again, though I'm mixed with what happened on the penultimate page. Having her return only to be shot in the head that same issue felt more along the lines of cleaning house, however I'm not listing her on the casualty list yet. Yeah, Black Major pointed the loaded gun and (presumably, since we cut to outside the ship) fired, but Abdi Ali was also nearby sporting a weapon. Given the rivalry between Ali and Black Major during the issue, I cannot help feeling that perhaps there was more to that gunshot than meets the eye. Ah well, guess we'll have to wait a few weeks to see whether it's a bluff or not. |

I enjoyed this issue. My only complaint was that I'm sick of Scarlett being used so much, but that is minor.

I thought this issue was great. That damn hippie Dr. Burkhart getting into trouble again...how many times have the Joes rescued her now?
Also totally cool that the Red Shadows (the '80s style ones, although the group that showed up in the DDP series were cool also) finally make an appearance in ARAH. I'm glad we're finally seeing more threats for the Joes to fight off other than Cobra. Really hope they keep the RS separate from the snakes. |

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I was pretty disappointed with this issue. In 187 we saw Jinx acquiring the data that would presumably advance the Blue Ninja story-arc. Instead, for whatever reason we pick up an entirely new story featuring characters that are new to the ARAH universe. I have two issues with this:
1. There was no reason why we couldn't have followed last issue's revelations and still had this story take place. Because they aren't connected though, this ended up feeling more like a standalone special missions issue, rather than part of the ongoing story. 2. I don't mind the inclusion of the Red Shadows per se, but with so many awesome brand new domestic characters and vehicles released in recent years like Shadow Tracker, Hazard Viper, Nano BAT, etc. It somewhat baffles me that Larry would choose to include a foreign concept from the '80s, no matter how popular it may be, instead of the many current relevant concepts available to him. Those points aside, I thought this issue was enjoyable enough. Seeing Dr. Burkhart again was an interesting throw back. I do agree that we are seeing some of these characters too often though particularly Scarlett. Also, has anyone else noticed in the last few issues it seems like ARAH is getting more violent than ever? Road Pig bashing someone's head in with the cinderblock, Scarlett throwing ninja stars in someone's eyes...these are definitely no longer the days of the comic's code authority. hahaha

I had just about given up on gi joe comics and had actually convinced myself I wasn't wasting my money on any more issues but as I said that I caught glimpse of a preview cover for GI Joe 189 and it had a Roboskull on the cover! I thought I'd hold off and see how the Red Shadows feature in the RAH universe.
I thought it was great! I grew up with Action Force and this really took me back to the old Battle Action Force comics. Some great nods to the old styling of the UK bad guys. I really enjoyed it. It did feel like a Special Mission issue but those where great comics too. Good work IDW you have kept me on board. Plus the GI Joe #1 issue got me excited again also! I can't wait for the 2nd issue of that |
