I made this thread to take care of a couple promised posts while showing off a very cheap and very cool supply I've been using with my customs.
The Item What I found one day by accident while at Big Lots, was a package from a hairdressing supply company, "goody", full of what are called "shaders". I'm sure our wives and girlfriends know about them but they kick ass in customizing. For one, eventhough they are a little shiny, they come in earthy browns so they can blend into hair. They are very responsive to super glue and acryllic paint. They are very strong with a lot of stretch before breaking. Plus, each packet has like 25 of them for maybe 2 bucks at the most. The Uses 1. I use them in my hip conversions where I add hip articulation to my 25th figures. They are really strong and thin enough to fit within the space of the lower torso thus mimicking the old style O-Rings for the 25th figures. 2. Because they are thin, have stretch, and can be painted and glued, you can make them into slings for swords sheaths (daremo) or slings for your rifles. I bet they can even be made into new harnesses, and wrist/ankle wraps. In this first, photo, I'm showing off two different types of slings. The first one on the left, is a fictional one I made for Outback. I had to make it up to fit with all of his equipment, so it doesn't look right on my Grand Slam, who is smaller and without the huge arms. The sling on the right is a 3 Pt. Sling that is fully adjustable and can hold the gun in different poses. After a little alteration to the gun, the sling looks and works just like a real life tactical 3 pt sling. |

You are my hero! Those look sweet, did you make the sling buckle, too? I'm going to have to look for these now. Thanks for posting this.

Now it can be used in make slings for sword sheaths. For my Night Creeper Leader custom I needed a material that had a lot of stretch because he's using the serpentine blade. This means I needed a material that can stretch with the sheath as well.

I'm going to have to try this! Do you have a pic of the Shaders package? I can't seem to google it and it isn't on Goody's website. Also, did you make that sheath for the Night Creeper Leader? Where did you get those cool looking ring weapons or did you make those too?

Those slings look perfect & the scabbard is 1000 times better than the old ARAH/JvC Chunky scabbards.
nice work. |

All this stuff looks great. What other materials were used in making the straps or was it all green stuff. I would love to hear more about your technique. Last edited by mikeTime; 03-17-2008 at 07:48 AM.. |

Outside of the buckle and the makeshift sling adaptor made out of craft wire, it's all strap.
On the three point sling, I start with the middle loop on the sling and superglue it so that there is a loop wide enough for the strap to be slid through it. I then wrap it around the figure, from the front to over on of the shoulders and across the back, to the opposite underarm. This piece is fitted through the adaptor I made on the stock. Then it's fitting through the loop I originally made and then it's brought to the front and connected either with another adaptor or tied up like in the photo above. With my first one, it took maybe 10 minutes at the most. The scabbard is made from a datalink cable. i needed something that can flex with the serpentine. I just added a few slits down the sides to give it a little more flex. And those ring weapons that are from the POTC Deluxe Sao Feng are referred to as Chakras or Indian Throwing Stars. They can be used for either melee or as a projectile. |
