When Wave 4 of ROC 1st leaked from the Walmart computers a lot of speculation evolved from fans. We had familiar names like Charbroil & Kamakura, but then we also had some new names to ponder, one of which was the "Red Fang Ninja."
Judging by his file card, the similarities between this Ninja & the classic Red Ninja of the modern era can easily be established that this is perhaps Hasbro's idea of a ROC Red Ninja. Unfortunately, the Red Fang Ninja is not so easily convincing as such. The chemical make up of this figure does not have many Ninja attributes (by classical or GI Joe sense) & he does not look like much of a troop builder with his hair showing, as most troops are not identified by something as unique as this guy's haircut/color... If this warrior is supposed to be a clan, & a ninja clan, he does a mediocre job of making you think as much. In fact, I can easily say this looks like something out of my brother's sketch pad from the 80's as a version of himself as a future ninja, rather than an actual packaged GI Joe ninja product. lol A collection of previously seen parts (like most of wave 4), the Red Fang Ninja's construction is the basic Neo-Viper body, a Resolute Cobra Trooper head, & webgear from the comic pack Devil's Due Storm Shadow. Now even though the card art shows Fang's webgear placed the same as the DD Storm Shadow, it is actually packaged backwards on the figure. This is an easy fix & even the most novice of Joe fans will figure this one out as the sheathed backpack will not fit with the webgear on this way. The colors are where this guy really shines as he is a mix of flat & glossy blacks, & an interesting deep shade of burgundy. The color is definitely in the realm of other ROC Cobra forces so he will blend in fine with your pre-established ROC Cobra legions. The gear is slim with this one as you get a ROC stand, Firefly's goggles, ROC Storm Shadow's swords, backpack sheath, & throwing star-disc launcher & nothing else. This guy really could have used some cool gear to help spruce him up, but unfortunately this is not the case. Minus the missile launcher, you would almost think he would be in a multi-pack rather than a single released figure because he is such a lightweight in comparison to most ROC releases. With wave 4 barely breaking waves in retail & mostly hitting online, the Red Fang Ninja won't be a peg warmer, but if he was not as unavailable to the mass & was included in the 1st 3 waves, I have a feeling he would be very common on your retail pegs... but that's just imho. ^ This is not a figure I was enthralled with either peeps, that's why I did this review as it's more criticism than compliments for me on this one. I try to see the good in every figure, but I'm also not afraid to point out short-comings when they are there...

I don't buy him as a "troop building ninja" for the reasons stated in your review (great job, btw!), but i think he will work good as kind of a "ninja mercenary" hanging around the Terrordrome acting as a bodyguard for one of the Cobra biggies...

^ Yeah Chief, that's the way I think of him somewhat too, he just feels more like a unique character by some of the choices used. ...And thanks!
