Normally you can tell when all the super-hot "rare" figures are gone and everything else is left untouched. But lately the seems to be a near universal wipeout, so it could be "legit" fans.

Scalpers leave a trail of slime. Collectors leave a trail of tears.

I hate scalpers because not only do they deny me figures but kids as well, however a good friend of mine was able to support himself in college by scalping. I felt bad because he often would talk to me to see what was in and hot and rare. Never judged the guy because he was just playing it smart. If you knew you could turn 5 dollars into 20 wouldn't you?
It may suck when you finally find that wave you been looking for and only see 5 of the common figure and know what happened but you do after realize if we didn't pay the high prices on eBay then we wouldn't be in this situation. |

So I guess that means Target, Publix, my Chevy dealer's parts department, the independent insurance agent I deal with, Wal Mart (they tend to sell closer to the margin but still sell cheap items they've bought for a profit), Game Stop, Movie Stop, Applebee's, Red Lobster, Food Lion, Winn Dixie, Domino's Pizza, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, Dillards, Sears, Best Buy, Comp USA, Sports Authority, Play it Again Sports, Used car dealers, new car dealers, etc etc etc are all scalpers since they all buy items that they turn around and sell at a considerable markup.
Sorry man, I agree with what you're saying that folks should stop buying from folks on EBay but I think your definition of scalper is a little off because buying low and selling for a profit is the basis of our capitalist system. Now, if you don't believe in capitalism that's one thing but, if you do, then you have to acknowledge that the guy who buys all the Joe toys at Target is doing the same thing that stores or restaurants around the country do on a daily basis. The only difference is, one hawks his wears on EBay and the other puts them on a shelf with a price tag.

It is pretty awesome. Free admission, free parking, and hundreds of booths selling everything from sports cards to knock-off items to toys, plus the occasional "celebrity" autograph event. It can be a great time as long as you don't blow all your money on an item that you can pick up at the nearby Toys R Us for half the price. Coolest thing is when you find someone willing to trade with you.

Dude, you know exactly what I was saying, so no need to get into semantics about it.
From YourDictionary.com: transitive verb 3. (Informal) to buy and sell in order to make small, quick profits 4. (Informal) to resell (tickets to the theater, a sports event, etc.) at a price higher than the regular price Happy now?

Whenever a scalper is around another scalper, they sense each other. Then they will go to the parking lot and have a sword fight. The winner gets the prize. The loser gets his head chopped off. In the end, there can be only one (per case). Here's a pic of one I caught at Wal-Mart:

I have been to my Target at 8 am and I sometimes see people come early and look at all the toys. The usual toys they buy are hot wheels, match box, cars, star wars, etc. Since they go over all the toys in the toy section, it is likely that these are resellers rather than collectors who buy many types of toys.
Resellers have many patrons so I would assume that these resellers are providing an essential service. Sometimes resellers do something more drastic such as trying to buy up all the quantities of a particular toy in their local stores to ensure that buyers have to buy from the resellers. Buyers just have to be patient and wait for new stock from the stores or wait for the resellers to return their unsold items to the stores. If the stores don't restock the toy, then buyers have no choice but to buy from the resellers. If buyers don't like to buy from the resellers, the buyers can also go to the stores at 8:00 am like what the resellers are doing. Sometimes, the resellers are store employees so you cannot beat them unless you also become a store employee. |
