I don't work retail but my cousin does, she told me about a lady that brought back a birthday cake to Wal-Mart, wanted a full refund. She said the cake had been eaten on and they had tried to cover it up with icing that didn't even match what was on the rest of the cake.
She asked the lady about it and she said it was like that when she bought it, it was a "special" L shaped cake. The lady then says she has the recepit out in her car and left to go get it. She was gone an hour or so finally came back with it. After talking with her manager my cousin told the lady all she could do was give her store credit. The lady got mad, said she just needs the cash not store credit. She got mad and left. My cousin wasn't working the next day but her friend told her that lady came back and told them she forgot her cake and wanted it back. They had already thrown it away. She threw a fit and they had to have her escorted out of the store, she started turning stuff over and threating people. All that over a cake lol. |

Wow, I love these stories. It makes work seem a little less crazy. I've actually had 2 experiences that stand out in my mind. I'm a pharmacy manager at a busy 24hr Walgreens so we see all sorts of crazies. One lady brought back a pregnancy test and wanted a refund. When she handed it to me, she informed me that she tried to use it but it was "defective." I washed my hand with wood grain alcohol for at least 30 minutes...
The other was on a Saturday night right before my shift ended. We just filled 13 prescriptions for a guy when the paramedics came rushing into the store. Come to find out he died in the Men's room while sitting on the toilet. Took a long time before I could go back in there.. |

I was working for Wal-Mart back in 97. It was the day after Christmas and I was working the Service Desk. Generally speaking we took just about everything back and gave out money no questions asked.
A woman came up and wanted to refund her bread maker. The package had obviously been open so I opened it and looked inside, and low and behold it was a bread maker machine, but one that was like 10 years old. This thing was stained and smelt like fish gone funky. She then took it out of my hands and threw it at me. Needless to say, I needed stitches and a trip to the emergency room. I had no idea where I was or what I was doing. That is the hardest I have ever been hit in my life. |

1) How much does this cost? 2) What's the cheapest you can let me have this for? Seriously I got asked question number 1 at least 20 times a day. And at least 2 or 3 times a week someone would want to haggle on an item that cost $1.00! I've got tons more stories, but I'll have to post those later. |

I did get into a fight once with one of the older 01s, over a case of spilled pallets. It wasn't too bad, actually kinda fun. Weirdly honorable, the tattooed-up veteran dude was impressed that I could hold my own, so no hard feelings came of it. The other 01's got a good laugh, management never knew, so everything was cool. However, there was this one time. I was carting crates through the toy aisle to the sports section (hooray for moving poorly-stacked ammunition!), and somebody throws a nerf gun at me. To clarify - does not shoot darts, throws the gun. Some of the ammo gets knocked over, I sigh with relief when the pallet doesn't explode, and I turn around. And there they were, this gang of six 10-year olds or so. No parents, just the little ragamuffins. Of course, I think it was just an accident, and hand the gun back over to one of them. Then, like magic, they all start throwing those big dogeballs they keep in that elastic cage thing. Like, they just had them, out of thin air. They're having the time of their lives, the godforsaken Lost Boys, and I'm being pelted with inflated plastic from the toy aisle to linens. My manager is walking up the aisle, and he sees me just running for hell toward the back room, screaming some profanity about "hell children," while the kids are chucking anything they can get their hands on at the outlander. I get to the stockroom, and wait for awhile. Manager comes in, chuckles, says it was something about "no girls allowed in the boys section." I'll never go into a K-Mart again. Plus, I just look horrible in a red collared shirt.
