I don't get it. I see a lot of customs selling for HUGE money on e-bay. I watched a custom Optimus Prime sell for $3500 granted it was made by FrenzyRumble but still.
I watched the Custom Resolute Storm Shadow go for around $150. But every time I put up a custom Joe, I barely even break even.. Which I didn't on Zartan.. he cost me $25 to make plus $5.35 in Listing fees + Selling Fees. + Pay Pal Fees. Is it just a bad time to sell customs at all? I thought my Transformer custom would get me around $300 based on other customs I see sell, but the best bid I got was $35 so I ended it early. Has anyone else experienced similar grief? Is it better to just put a Buy It Now Price on them?

It's a touchy subject. You may be a GREAT customizer, but what you do may not appeal to what a certain bankroller is looking for. Personally, I've got about 90% plus ratio for "Good customs" but have never or will ever attempt to sell my customs. If someone likes what I do and wants a replicant, send me the parts and swing something my way for the time to do it.
I'm no Jin, Daremo, Longest Day, or Alyosha...but I get offers. Don't take it too hard! Do what you do and have fun while doing it (Side note: I hate all the Shadow CGs I gotta make...it's boring!)

Yeah, what he said. You can't predict what will touch someone...what takes you hours could mean nothing to someone and what takes you minutes could mean the world. It all depends on hitting those things that there is no way you can predict. So don't try to.
You gotta do it because you love to do it. Set your minimum return and let the cards fall where they will. Quote:
customs selling are a weird market...when i was doing old marvelegends custom i had figures that i put a azzload of work and detail into and they didnt sell for much...yet i made a pete wisdom (from excalibur and the mini series pryde and wisdom) out of a head from the brown and orange 80's wolvie display and a spare prof x body. took me a total of ten mintes to paint and put together and it went for 125 bucks so it just a matter of buyer and prespective. then again i did sell my Deadly genesis team for 385 so....i guess it all depends on the person buying.

How it works:
2 things, there is life with eBay and life without eBay. Let's start with...life with eBay... Drop the Joes like a rock & learn how to make combiner Transformers. Joes rarely fetch a price above breaking even, that's just the way it is. Now... Life without eBay... Commissions ! how do you get commissions ? Post like a mad man in the customs forum & enter contests, just keep making ish & before you know it pm's are coming in with work !(I'm booked til 2010 - All Transformers ) I find that I only take on maybe half of all requests as I don't have time for them all or they are not challenging enough.......(sorry, I won't paint Scarlett 1 shade green, life's too short) or the commission cost are too high.(Like BHiga6181 said, $100+) While most Joe collectors faint at the thought of having to pay more than $7.99 for a retail figure, the TF guys are paying a lot more for their retail figures so maybe that drifts over into both custom markets as well ? What's the most a custom Joe has ever gone for on eBay ? $500.00 ?......??? and change...maybe ?...if that !? I know that a few TF's have gone for more than $3500.00 and at least 1 for $4000.00 Me ? My customs don't sell high enough to justify selling there, and the fees have snowballed outta control IMO. I'd rather be paid my rate for a commission than gamble on eBay with Joes...Transformers maybe but no for Joe ! For me it's all commissions & knowing I'll be paid what I quoted/charged, no eBay fees or final bid price losses. Other tips: Watch for people who aren't good at describing exactly what they want or can't pay the bulk of the cost upfront before any work starts or out of pocket costs arise. Buy a better camera, mine is a $200.00 one from Costco I bought in '07. If pictures can't produce a "right there in front of ya cept a little bigger" look then people WILL avoid bidding/buying. Show your work in your sig. There is not as much disposable income out there like there may have been a year or so ago, that is a factor as well.

You're right that it is odd how there are average customs that vary from high sells to few or no bids at all.
Yours are pretty good, so I can't say it's poor quality. I do know that many of the really high sells have something very unique about them. Sometimes it's extensive work as far as sculpting or construction that makes it impossible to truly replicate. Character choice is another one. If you're selling an unusual character that doesnt typically get made, its going to get noticed. Also, there's the fame factor. If Jin sells even a mediocre piece, it's likely to sell more than others since he has fans who would love to just own something he made. His body of work is not only great, but incredibly large and his stuff is considered art to many peope. Other times I think it's kind of freak luck thing, where a couple of people who really want the item are willing to war over it. These are just factors that I'm throwing out there. I've only posted one custom on here with plans to sell, and although it's not the greatest, the random offers I've received don't match the time I spent on it. |

when i was painting back in the day I showed my to the local comic/toy shop they liked it and asked to display it to try and help sell their models. of course i started to get soem of my supplies free for letting them display them. but that did lead to sales right from the shop and custom orders for diff model kits. maybe there is a local shop you deal with that might display some, of course they might want some of your slice of the pie though but just a suggestion
