Don't give up! That's not what I meant.
What could you do? To change the situation you have now? And I guess I do have some practical advice. Working at Wal-Mart is not what all retail is like. I have a friend who quit Wal-Mart a couple of years ago and he had worked there for ten plus years. He said they have gone crazy and working there is pure hell. Could it be that if you could make a lateral move, that would help, until you are in a better position for more education/training, etc.?

You won't find working for Target to be much if any better than working for Walmart. They're trained to treat people like crap, just like the Wizzlemizzle. There are retailers who pay better than most like Home Depot, but they'll always treat you as if they own you if you're a full timer. When I was focused on music, I would just get two part time jobs and play them against eachother. They'd think I was working the other job, but really I'd be hundreds of miles away playing in a run down club or a rec center or something. Ah, living the dream!

Honestly, the best way to not work weekends without a degree (or owning your own business) is to work for someone that
doesn't work weekends. The medical field can be tricky without a piece of paper we both know you can't afford BUT if you're a bit likeable, smile, and dress nice you can more or less walk in to a dental assistant job or something like that. All you do is go to a dentist office and ask if you can speak to the dentist. Once he comes out say, "I'm thinking about going to school to be a dental assistant and I'd like to see If it's a good fit for me." Then you compliment what you've heard about the office and how good it is and mention that you'd like to learn the ropes in an atmosphere like theirs. This approach works damn near everytime for paralegal positions too. Again, provided you smile, dress nice and are altogether likeable. I don't know what you mean when you say, "perform" but if it isn't something you've already been doing (profitably) with your spare time, it sounds like it can keep waiting. Whatever you decide, give it your all. Learn the fields terminology, speak (and think) in ways you can benefit your desired employer: Not how that employer can benefit you. And ALWAYS always ALWAYS maintain relationships with the people in charge. Either the Dentist, the Lawyer or the Production Manager. Just because they don't have an opening now, doesn't mean they wont next week. Remember that. Don't call to see if they have openings, rather call to ask questions about the field and how things are done. You follow me? It also shows these people you're in it for the long haul, and not just going through some phase where you think it could be fun or whatever. Whether or not you go to school, you're still going to have to learn the way your employer likes things done. The degree itself does nothing but tell them you know the terminology and already have a vested interest in whatever you're talking to them about. As I hope you've seen, there are certainly ways around that. |

The job market sucks here too. I have been looking for a better job for a while. I went to college and when I got out, no one would hire me cause I had no experience. Then I volunteered and I still can't get a job cause the economy is even worse now. Its starting to get me really pissed off.

Your advice is pretty sound, but I do kinda take issue with this one part. You have to pay a lot of dues in the entertainment field before it becomes stable work. If it's something you want to do, you're only making it harder by putting it off. If there's no kids at home waiting for mommy or daddy to bring home the bacon, I say now is the perfect time to take a chance.
