Possibly even if it doesn't. Just depends on Paramount and Hasbro's state of mind on the matter, and how much they factor in the "strikes" the movie had against it to begin with (no pun intended, given the writer's strike contributed).
It's possible we could get a sequel that simply costs significantly less to make. |

Seriously, G.I. Joe came out the right year. 2009 was a slow summer season and there was no real competition for it. Look at it from this point, the regular admission price is $10 so $100 million is not hard to attain. The box office buster bracket has been the same over the years regardless of the rise of admission prices. I know that the ticket sales for this film has fallen since last weekend due to District 9. Thats just how it is...

I don't know how long that will last as District 9 only earned $37million domestically it's opening weekend. I thought it would have earned more than that, but on the other hand it only cost 30 million to make.

It opened at significantly less screens than ROC, and as you pointed out, its fairly low budgeted.

It's tracking over the first 10 days domestically is near identical to Fantastic 4 which made $330 domestically. However it's harder to compare international success.
It would need to make between $310-£330 mill gross overall to make back it's budget. It's the film's budget that ended up being the problem in the end, as it's really raked on the pressure for box office success |

Yes, RoC did do for Hasbro's third-quarter profits what Transformers 2 did for the 2nd quarter. Remember: Hasbro gets paid when the retailers buy from them, not the consumer. All that massive amount of product that's on shelves now? Already money in Hasbro's bank. It may (or may not) warm shelves, and might (emphasis on might) cause the brand to get downsized again after the holidays, but Hasbro will have already made its' money for this year.
And there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of G.I. Joe merch planned for the big money-maker, Q4. Shout Factory's next DVD set in November and the RoC DVD in December seem to be the only big G.I. Joe-related guns. :/ |

By the way, this is pretty major and I don't think it's been mentioned yet: Rise of Cobra hasn't even been released in Italy or Greece yet.
Those countries alone will probably add no less than $10 million to the movie's international total. Last edited by Jonathan; 08-17-2009 at 01:46 PM.. |

That massive amount of Rise of Cobra product that's on shelves now falls well within Hasbro's Q2 earnings, since most of it was sold to retailers and sitting in stockrooms well before the third quarter began on June 28.
