The one thing that makes ROC different from many other movies (except for Transformers) is that there is a lot of profit connected to its toys and merchandise. Other movies sink and/or swim on ticket sales alone but ROC really has until Christmas to maximize the GI Joe profit machine.
The one thing that might guarantee the future of a GI Joe sequel(s) is if we discover the whole Cobra Nanomite thing is directly tied to an ancient 'Transformers' artifact. So it's possible we could see 3 3/4 Transforming vehicles by the 3rd movie in the series.

It also didn't get to open mid-summer like The Dark Knight or either of the transformers movies did. And none of the buzz about it being an actor's last full film so people should go see it, either. For better or worse they held off on its release until late in the summer when people would be getting tired of going to the movies for said summer blockbusters.
I think it'll be a situation like The Incredible Hulk where the first one is glossed over and the second film that comes out ends up blowing it away. |

The good news is Paramount already announced plans for the sequel, and if you factor in worldwide statistics, ROC has just about made up the cost of the film in that 10 days. With the next few weeks of ticket sales to consider, and eventual dvd release, we'll see the sequel happen.

Yes it did and it was a great film, but alot of that had to do with Ledger's death and the buzz of his Joker being the best ever. I know alot of people who went just to see him act in his final role who weren't Batman fans, but came away pleased with the movie. My wife asked to go see it on vacation just because of that, and she is far from a batman fan. Now I don't think it accounted for the whole amount just saying it boosted it alot. Sad to say but many connect to stars after they die instead of before.
Yes before someone points it out I know this wasn't really his final role but alot of people thought so at the time. |

I don't think the general buzz on the street will make or break this film...I think school yard chatter is more important, no? It's a glorified commercial existing only to hype a toy line. Toys R Us receipts are more relevant here than box office numbers, imho.

I wouldn't say it's a bomb, but it's not a blockbuster in the common sense either.

Maybe, but both of the Hulk movies ended up grossing about the same, ($132 vs $134 US grosses). While there is contention which was the 'better' movie, as they were wildly different.

Another thing to consider: People are tighter on their finances lately, they may be waiting for it to hit the cheap theaters. I know I grew up having to always wait for movies to hit the $2 theaters
