If it was really important to whoever I wind up marrying, I'd probably consider it, but I would tend to follow tradition.

I agree with the the statement that if the woman does not want to take your name than she does think much of you to begin with. I think one of the first things to go with liberal thought is respect. And I think respect is one of four things that make a relationship/ marriage work (love, trust, and understanding) being the other three.
People have different reasons for doing different things and I guess most of us would never agree with each other's reasons 100%. I strongly disagree about having a family with two last names. If you can't find it in yourselves to unite under the same name than I don't see how that realtionship can go anywhere.

You didn't include an option for those would rather face a firing squad than an altar, so I didn't vote in the poll.
I'm a Libra, so I want everything to be balanced and fair. I also relate most strongly to the green personality out of the blue, gold, green and orange. I am gold least of all, and they are the most traditional, whereas the greens do not give a f*ck about a tradition if they think it is stupid. My secondary color is blue, so that means I want everybody to be treated fairly and nobody to be unhappy, blah blah blah, which goes along with my Libra-ness, so I don't like things that smack of inequality. I'm also White, as you can probably tell by my feet, so apparently I am fond of hyphenating names. #22 Having Two Last Names Stuff White People Like Anyway, I have always felt that a woman having to take a man's last name when they got married stank of symbolism that a man now "owns" his wife, that she is his property now, like a slave. So, I suggest combining the last names and for the sake of expediency, the first one is the one that comes first in the alphabet. So, if Robert Kelly and Miley Cyrus get married, then their names would be: Miley and Robert Cyrus-Kelly But if Emma Watson and Robert Kelly get married, their names would be: Emma and Robert Kelly-Watson Again, the first name that begins with the letter in the alphabet that comes first is written first when writing the couple's name. So if you want your child to always be first, name it Aaron or Aardvark or something like Aaaaaaawesome. Children have their parents' last names. However, if they have the misfortune to get married later in life, then if that child be a masculine child, he drops his mother's last name and takes his wife's last name-this being symbolic of a shift in priorities, if you will. If that child be a feminine child, she drops her father's last name and gets her husband's last name, same symbolism. Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 07-25-2009 at 01:44 PM.. |

So, does that mean that if you don't take your wife's name, she doesn't think much of you either? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
