Another Movie debate thread. Wow.
My 2-cents. I have an eleven year old son who has been talking about this movie since the teaser during the Superbowl. He loves the toys and I get to go Joe hunting with one of my kids. We picked up some figures this weekend and he wanted to go home and watch old episodes while we opened them. As said before it's just an interpretation. His Joe will be different than mine. Just as my Joe was different than my father's. He had a box of old 12" figures that he'ld occasionally break out so I could play with them. Different yes. But at least some of the characters have been transfered to this new base of Joe fans and hopefully they embrace the legacy which is G.I. Joe. Even if you don't like the movie it looks like we're getting a Snow Cat. And that kicks Ass in my opinion. At least the old is being mixed in with the new.

why? So he can get attached to it and make every fanboy get all excited only so he can chicken out a month later. Green Hornet anybody? Do you know just how many times he was asked to be a part of a superhero project only to chicken out? I'm a huge fan of Kevin Smith but if he isn't making a movie with Dick and Fart jokes and pot head humor then he is just too big of a chicken. Facts are facts. The Superman script he wrote kicked ass but it was never made and as far as him directing anything out of his element, don't count on it. People have built him up so high in the fanboy universe all he could do is fail.

I love that this quote is not only all you have, but you either dishonestly interpret it by ignoring the parts that dispute your positions, or simply do not understand what he is saying to begin with.
as far as new directions, the Dark Knight is a new direction on Batman, and yet it is done by bringing back the characters from the ls comic. wow, those two dynamics can exist simultaneously, and yet you want to claim that they somehow contradict. just one more glorious failure of an argument from our resident expert in glorious failures. wait a minute, I already know how you will counter my post, don't worry: But what about the movie's spirit? Should fans expect to see a live-action version of the cartoon, an update on the Marvel comics, or something else entirely? According to Goldner, Sommers and crew want to take filmgoers back a couple of decades: "Steve Sommers is very different. But he's perfect, because if you think about his movies like 'The Mummy,' it's the perfect action/adventure movie. If you think about what we're trying to do for G.I. Joe, really bringing back that '80s G.I. Joe from the Marvel comics -- those first 155 issues are really our focus. If you think about that, you'll understand what we're trying to get at with all those characters and all the intricate relationships. I don't think you'd see this movie as wacky. I think you're going to see this movie as being inspirational for younger kids and totally in the sweet spot for the guys who grew up on G.I. Joe." ahh, like a broken record. |

Giving the benefit of the doubt and waiting until the movie is shown to make judgement doesn't equate to defending a movie.i've always said that if the movie sucks, so be it, it sucks, but i'm not going to say that unless i watch the movie and find out for myself. I've said this before, so i wonder why some of you keep thinking that the staff here has to be positive about the movie and suck up to hasbro. The same exact thing was said about transformers before it premiered in 2007. Hell i was one of the fans who felt alienated in 2007 until a few weeks leading to the premiere, and ended up loving the movie. Whether or not people agree with how tf1 was made, bay and the associated team did something right as that movie and it's associated toyline made a ton of money. The 2007 movie line alone sold more than the armada trilogy combined, and then some. It wasn't even double the sales, it was exponentially morea sophisticated movie goer isn't going to be watching any of the movies that are being hyped up for the summer unless it's an indie release. Might as well say these same guys won't watch harry potter because it's "that movie based on a kid's book". If we are going to argue sales figures, i bring up rotf. That's made 700 million worldwide so far despite mixed reviews. Sure harry potter may or may not break that record, but if a sophisticated movie goer doesn't watch a movie based on kid's items be it toys or a book, it sure as hell didn't put a dent into the sales that rotf made, and won't put a dent into harry potter. Does any joe fan here, let alone, any man here really want to see the guy from freaking twilight in g.i. Joe? Who the hell wants to see emo in g.i. Joe? Might as well throw up the white flag to cobra and cry about it on the way to the brig. Neither did the spiderman movies, and a bunch of other blockbusters yet they were still very successful and made a ton of money. It's not any different from the star wars prequels. Kids watched rots and the way anakin alone ended up towards the end is far more violent than anything we will see in rise of cobra. Hell what happened to the sith when they confronted sidious and the onslaught of order66 is more violent than what happens to cover girl. It really isn't as violent as some of the other movies that kids were watching this year, like wolverine. |

But if you are saying he cannot write it then I am going to have to strongly dissagree. By your own admission he can write Superhero movies as he wrote a kick ass Superman film. As far as calling the man a chicken - well I was wondering if you knew him, I only ask because I do and I can assure you that he is not afraid of any project so I am not sure what facts you are referring to. He is very tongue in cheek and aware of his place in pop culture and plays into that. So I would not take what he says in interviews to serious. He has a flair to be overly dramatic in how he says things. Anyway, I do agree with what you are saying about the Fanboys. Last edited by Rocky; 07-15-2009 at 11:11 AM.. |

The tone, spirit, sense of adventure, seriousness, emphasis on connected relationships between main characters, SE/SS all that stuff is based on the comic books. Is it a literal interpretation? No, it's not. But it is based on the creating a story in the same vein as the original comics.

Hasbro or Sommers, or Lorenzo Di Bonavisfulofcrap said that the movie would be based on the the first 155 issues of the Joe comic... THAT SOURCE MATERIAL! there was no VvV, S6 Adventure Team, Sgt. Savage or Extreme in that run...JUST ARAH... |

And the only thing that the movie doesn't have that the comics had is the vintage ARAH uniforms. The rest of it is all there.
The movie creates a new storyline that could very easily fit into a run of the marvel comic (talking plot, not specific characters, I know I have to spell that part out because there are some that have to be told...).

Man, I think I prefer the threads where people argue about who outranks who? Flint or Duke? Would you do Scarlett or Lady Jaye? Who would win in a bloodsport? Firefly or Stalker?
Fact 1: Some people don't like what they've seen in the previews and won't go see the film. Fact 2: Some people love what they've seen so far and are very excited about the film. Fact 3: Some will love it and some will hate it. Fact 4: It's ALL subjective. It's ALL a matter of taste. No one NEEDS a reason to like or dislike something. Fact 5: I don't like pineapple on my pizza. See how that works! |
