On the subject of the Dreadnoks, it's a very real and contemporary threat here in Australia. We have quite a few different outlaw gangs, mostly the Commancheros and the Bandidos. They pretty much run the tattoo / body piercing industry and control most of the amphetamine and ecstasy trade... ... They're such a threat at the moment that we've heard lots of stories of Australian SAS soldiers working undercover to bring them down.

I keep going back to high-seas piracy, the threat du jour that the international community can all agree on as something worthy of conducting armed action against (NATO has even formed a special task force with the mission of countering piracy off the Eastern African coast). The Dreadnoks already have someone who can serve as their helmsman/quartermaster (Zanzibar), and it ties in somewhat with their classic depiction as being based in the swamps. Maybe they are covertly based in the Florida Everglades like in the filecards and the comics (it's a plausible locale for an amphibious base of operations), but they conduct piracy operations in Atlantic, Carribean, and Gulf of Mexico shipping lanes, in international waters (> 200 nautical miles from the shore), putting their activities outside the regular operating range of the Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security and allowing JSOC to "cross over" and order GI Joe to engage with them as appropriate. Alternatively, maybe they still operate from Australia, conducting piracy operations in the relatively nearby Strait of Malacca (where many real-world pirates ply their trade). Quote:
So I read the novelization of the RoC movie last night (quick read, 250 pages, large text, only took like 4-5 hours). I'm even more excited for the movie. The connections that people have been bitching about, they work in the context of the movie. The nano-mites work and the threat that is set up at the end is HUGE.
It's definately a Joe movie. I can't wait to see it now. Reading the TPB didn't really sway my opinion of the film one way or another (my stance has always been a combination of being mildly intrigued & preemptively resigned). I think the story is just about as decent as we can expect for an adaptation of a toy property (given the context of who's doing the film adaptation though, you'll understand when I say that I've adjusted my expectations accordingly), and the dialogue, while okay for the most part, occasionally descends into Hollywood-cheese. But plot and dialogue are somewhat secondary concerns when it comes to summer action blockbusters. It's all about spectacle, and obviously, the comic can't deliver that (the art itself seemed rushed and unfinished, probably based on test shots and storyboards than the actual scenes used in the film). But really, the prospect of seeing Snake-Eyes and Storm-Shadow have it out on the big screen is enough enticement for me to see the movie in the cinema. Regardless of how it turns out critically as a "film," as a Joe fan, I don't think there's any way I can fail to appreciate the experience of watching live-action versions of my favourite characters battle it out on the big screen. Weekend updates:
Sci-Fi & Lightfoot Design notes: - I'm really glad with how Sci-Fi turned out. He's easily one of my favourite characters (partially because of how he's characterized in his filecard, and partially because he reminds me of a relatively very happy point in my childhood). - Lightfoot, if you've been paying attention the past few months, uses the composite image I originally intended for Fast Draw (before I changed my mind about how I'm recreating him). That's an iRobot Packbot he's got by the way (made by the same people who created the robotic vacuum cleaner they sell on TV). Fortunately, the Packbot doesn't use independent AI (it's dependent on user input and/or pre-programmed waypoints for navigation), so it does a much better job of hazardous materials/IED detection than its vacuum cleaner cousin does of cleaning. The Packbot has been adopted by the Army as its portable tactical robot. TO read the filecards in full, click on the Filecard Project link in my signature. Nice updates. Glad you gave Lightfoot the robot. He just wouldn't be Lightfoot without it.
The problem with comic adaptions is in getting the dialogue, because you have to change it up alot to get it into comic format it doesn't read as well. From what I've seen of the comic book previews, the novel is much much better. Which one is more accurate as far as the movie dialogue, have to wait and see... I can see the Dreadnoks being pirates. It's a good real world moderization for them.

New updates:
Stretcher & Windchill Design notes: - I took some liberties with Stretcher's design, streamlined him a bit. Couldn't think of a real-world analogue for the weird sled the original toy came with, so instead I gave him a collapsible litter (it's that contraption beside him) for carrying patients. In his filecard, I changed him from a standard Army health specialist to a Navy Fleet Marine Force Recon Independent Duty Corpsman: they're basically Navy "medics" who receive reconnaissance marine, airborne, and combat diver cross-training... the independent duty label means that they are qualified to conduct advanced emergency medical & surgical techniques without a medical officer present (in many ways, they're the Navy/USMC equivalent to the Army's Special Forces Medical Sergeants or the USAF's Pararescuemen). - Windchill is one of those characters I don't really have any interest in (he appeared about a year or two after I'd stopped collecting). He's pretty much a Snow-Job clone from what I've read in his filecard (they're both Olympic biathletes... what are the chances of that happening?). Still, creating a "realistic" take on him was a fun exercise. Made him a Marine to further distance him from Snow-Job. To read their full filecards, click on the Filecar Project link in my signature. Wow, you must be really smelling that finish line, z. I didn't think it was possible, but you're actually speeding up an already blistering pace.
On Low-Light and the choice of rifle. I'm glad you already had Spirit done, as it suits both characters better this way than if they were switched. I can see Spirit being the more mobile of the two, with Low-Light being more stationary with the more powerful weapon. Sci-Fi is a great update. You weren't really able to keep the color scheme exactly the same, but you got all the right gear in all the right places to still achieve a great result. The old Fast-Draw image was put to even better use on Lightfoot. Even though the design looked a bit plain before, the change in colors really spices the picture up. Windchill appeared to be a pretty straightforward update, and that's really all he needed. I did like that the original had gray pants to break his look apart from the other winter guys (and also looks less environment specific to boot). I'm glad you kept that element. Stretcher is the only one I'm not really sold on. I think you streamlined him a bit *too* much. The two-toned uniform, the gloves, the slightly rolled sleeves (although the sleeves being down work here) are some of his visual hallmarks. I would have liked to have seen at least one more of those elements make their way over to your update. That said, I could tell who he was, and your redesign still has great points about it. I do really like the stretcher and the vest (especially since the color scheme was carried over). There's not much I can add in terms of the filecards, but I do support your continuing diversification of the ranks. |

I like both of the new updates. Windchill looks cool and still has that vintage look to him. Stretcher, well not so much his vintage look, is close enough and definately has the Navy vibe to him.

Anybody pick up any ROC figures yet? Supposedly Target may be putting them out today. I found a few yesterday at TRU, but most was already gone. Although Shipwreck is a great update. He has a few flaws but it's the best version.

Glad you guys liked them.
@ Master Thespian: I'll probably update the Stretcher image with rolled-up sleeves. You're right in that he needs at least one more visual element to tie him into the original figure. EDIT: Stretcher pic updated, see above Last edited by zuludelta; 07-05-2009 at 01:21 PM.. |

I really wanted to work in an FMF Reconnaissance Independent Duty Corpsman into the team, and Stretcher was probably the best fit. FMFRID Corpsmen receive some of the most unique training in the special operations combat medicine field, but they don't get a lot of publicity like their Army (SF Medical Sergeants) and Air Force (PJs/Pararescuemen) counterparts. I'd say their airborne insertion and combat diving/swimming training is equivalent to that received by PJs, but they receive additional specialty training in treating diving-specific illnesses/injuries and they also have to undergo USMC combat arms training and pass the USMC Basic Reconnaissance Course (for all intents and purposes, they're parachute and combat diver qualified Reconnaissance Men who are also fully qualified paramedics).
