If it fails I think Hasbro will blame and punish the hardcore fans with a GI Joe / My little pony crossover.

I'm with Jmacq1. If the movie line fails, I don't think we'll see a return to ME, might see some of the stuff in the backlog come out, but nothing new.
No, at that point it would be time to retire Duke and Snake-Eyes and try to come up with a new concept. Also don't forget that Hasbro has this nice, shiny and new tv station that is for KIDS. So whatever their future plans for G.I. Joe are (post-movie, flop or not) will without a doubt involve the TV Station. Which is why I really think it will go one of two ways: 1- Movie a success, there will be a cartoon based on the movie continuity or at least something along those lines so it's fairly recognizable to the tons of new fans of the movie (which will probably outnumber the "oldschool RAH fans") 2- Movie's a flop (which it won't be), there will be a new concept and supporting cartoon. With this TV Station, Hasbro has the perfect oppotunity to try to recapture what helped caused the boom of the RAH line back in the '80s, having a weekly 30 min long toy commercial.

I'm not sure... with the lack of 25th/Modern Era stuff at retail stores, currently, I think Hasbro knows when they have the goose that lays golden eggs and if the movie does bomb, I think its toy line will be all right. We'll just have to wait and see...

I'm betting a new animated series is already in development (though maybe only very early development), and will most closely resemble the movie-verse, but be somewhat different at the same time. Hasbro would probably love it if they could pull a "Transformers" on G.I. Joe and reinvent it with a new "theme" every year or two, accompanied by a moderately successful animated series.
Of course, there's another possibility that I know likely terrifies folks: Combat Heroes: The Cartoon. They're already doing it for Marvel, and something like that would be highly appropriate for a "kids" channel.... |

The real question is: Is it golden enough for Hasbro in the long term? I'm betting not. They want more than just what 25A/ME is giving them. They want the kid market to buy G.I. Joe again, and they're never going to stop reinventing and reimagining Joe in god knows how many ways until that happens. |

They won't hinge the brand on Combat Heroes alone, but it is a great oppotunity for them to do two "lines" with accompanying cartoons.

Once again: How "golden" are those eggs really when the line only produces 1/4-1/3 as much as Transformers or Star Wars (at best) and still suffers from lots of pegwarming comic packs, DVD packs, vehicles, and even figures?

If "stragglers" means half to 3/4 full pegs, then I'd say supply has exceeded demand for many of these figures.
Prices on Star Wars and Transformers have gone up commensurate with G.I. Joe. Plus $4.88 was never the intended retail price of the figures...Wal-Mart was deliberately undercutting it to start. And none of that contradicts the fundamental point: If G.I. Joe were the "hot seller that can't keep up with demand" then the shelf-space allocated to it would have grown as retailers DEMANDED more G.I. Joe product. Instead, they dumped the line after Christmas, apparently because they had too much backstock. That does not speak well of being a "superhot" line from the retailers' perspective. Remember that "success" and "exceeding expectations" can have a lot of different meanings when coming from Hasbro's mouth, and in no way whatsoever does it necessarily represent the success of the line at the retail level. Indiana Jones was a huge success for Hasbro. It was a disaster at retail. Last edited by Jmacq1; 06-15-2009 at 09:34 AM.. |

It's not as strong a seller as folks make it out to be. Look at how little shelf-space it enjoys compared to other lines, and how readily it was "cut off" after the holidays. I'm more than willing to bet that Wal-Mart will happily dump the line completely if RoC drastically underperforms. They can fill that linear foot and a half of shelf-space with more Transformers or Star Wars toys or whatever new line Hasbro cooks up for next year (Iron Man 2).
If Wal-Mart doesn't buy the line, it almost certainly isn't coming out anywhere else, either. Hasbro doesn't do "online only" after DTC failed (and they just re-iterated their commitment to not doing "online only" lines in this week's Star Wars Q & A, mentioning G.I. Joe by name as having failed at that business model), and just selling to Target and Toys R Us is probably not enough for Hasbro to bother with development and production on a line. However, the brand would return eventually. But it's the "something new" that would probably be key to Hasbro and the Retailers' thinking. With two failed attempts at mass-media tie-ins using the RAH-era characters, I would not be at all surprised if the next "stab" at Joe after a failed movie would be something completely and totally different using all new characters and concepts. Every bit as much a "reimagining and relaunch" as RAH Joe was in 1982. Fans thinking that the failure of RoC means an automatic return to Classic/ME might be in for a very rude awakening. an if the movie fails, the last an best attempt to keep making money off this line would be the 25th, if they can that completely, then i'd say this line is dead. if it wasnt for us army builders, this line would of died already. your 8 guys a wave an one vehicle aint breathing shit in the lungs of this line, us army builders are/do.. to distinguish the 25th cus of the movie not doin' well would be a poor move on their behalf. |

And army building is done thru the online retailers, not the big box stores.
And you're right, if it wasn't for army building, the line would have died awhile ago. But honestly, there really isn't any difference between the ME stuff and the RoC stuff, especially as far as Hasbro is concerned. The figure molds are the same, the majority of the figures are the same (just painted different). It's just the packaging that is different.
