I don't know. Why not? It may not have to be huge but it could have room for a dozen to two dozen aircraft/helicopters. Some sort of offensive capability would be cool. And it would not need the escort a traditional carrier force needs. I hate the SHARC but this thing would make good use of the SHARCs if they could be torpedo launched.
Crew Size? Well what ever probably 1000 maybe less. |

Crew size of that big gets into the same issues as the Flagg and any other ship, are the crew members "Joes".
Also, I don't think they'd want a sub to be a permenant roving unit. When a Sub is submerged, it's pretty damn hard to get communications with them. So making mission changes and all that would be fairly difficult. But something that could torpedo launch the Sharcs would kick ass.

When I had been planning on using the Flagg, but now going to the 2 JHSV, I got to thinking..
The Flagg itself is great, but it's not very defensive or offensive. If attacked, it can't defend itself very well. Send in some Morays and it's in trouble. So what kind of fleet would the Joes have to escort/protect the Flagg? And what about early warning systems? If a Squadron of Rattlers is heading to the Flagg, you better have enough warning to scramble a flight of Skystrikers and get 'em airborne before the first Rattler is within bombing distance or else you're done.

design notes: - Pretty much a straight-up "modern translation" of the original character design, but I replaced his old jacket with a more contemporary "hard shell" cold weather military jacket. I also couldn't figure out what it was the oiginal character wore on his head. Best as I can tell, it was a tan/brown hood (probably from a sweater he wore underneath his jacket) with what looks like a sun visor to keep the hood in place. Seemed like an overly complicated arrangement, so I went with a more streamlined alternative of just giving him a be-flapped patrol cap. - I'm surprised no one has brought up the issue of why all the machine gunners I've made (Rock 'n' Roll, Roadblock, Rampart) are armed with M60E4 (or MK43, if you're going by NAVSPECWAR designation) machine guns when the standard light/medium general purpose machine gun used by the US Armed Forces is the M240 (M240B for the Army, Navy and Air Force, M240G for the Marines). Bunch of reasons. My formative years were spent in the 1980s (was too young to remember anything from the 1970s), and my common-sense notion of "machine gun" was pretty much shaped by stuff like the Tour of Duty series, Platoon, Predator, and of course, GI Joe comics. As such, the "chunky" looking M60 is my preferred machine gun visual. - By many accounts, the M60E4 is an inferior weapon to the M240B, particularly with the barrel. The M60E4's barrel is made of thinner material (a weight-saving measure) than the M240B's, so it needs replacement much more often in sustained fire conditions. Why then, has NAVSPECWAR preferred to outfit its SEAL teams and SWCC crews with M60E4/MK43 light machine guns instead of the M240B general purpose machine gun? Part of it probably has to do with the arcane government contracting process (maybe US Ordnance, the manufacturers of the MK43, have some pull with NAVSPECWAR?) but it also might be because for all its drawbacks and problems, the M60E4/MK43 is a much better weapon for direct action special operations. It's several pounds lighter than the M240B, so a MK43 machine gunner can carry more ammunition. Its dimensions also make it possible to accurately fire the MK43 from the shoulder, from an unsupported standing and kneeling position, much like an assault rifle. The M240B on the other hand, needs bipod or tripod support for accurate fire. In fact, in training, soldiers are told to never fire the M240B unless it's directly stabilized against a solid surface and should be fired unstabilized only in extremis. Also, I would think that direct action special operations would have less call for sustained machine gun fire in support of troop movements than conventional infantry operations, so the thinner-walled MK43 barrels are probably not as big a liability with the SEAL teams (and the GI Joe team). Seriously though, a lot of this is stuff that I've had rolling around in my head for years now, so it's just a matter of applying that experience, knowledge, and trivia to the "GI Joe framework" (although doing research and keeping up with contemporary militaria also helps). |

Did Rampart get alot of play in the DIC cartoon? I think he only appeared in 1 Marvel comic, at the end of the Trucial Abysmia war when he and Backblast provided cover for the Stealth when it went to take pictures of the Firebat coming out of the "hidden" Terror Drome CC had put in Behzreen (sp?). And he appeared in the 1 DDP issue where the Red Shadows killed him.
What a waste of a cool looking character. I love the update. I'm moving him onto my SEaL team thanks to Zulu's update.

Maybe two or three. Past a certain number of escorts, you'll probably hit the point of diminishing returns, where the escort vessels will start requiring more logistics and maintenance support, in a manner disproportionate to the amount of utility that can be gained from them. Maybe you can arm the Flagg the way the Soviet navy and the Chinese navy arm their ships to cut down on the need for independent escorts. Not that many fixed weapon stations, but they carry a bongload of man-portable air-defense and naval defense weapons (like Igla missiles and all manner of portable rocketry) that qualified sailors can fire from weapons platforms littered throughout the ship.

Rampart's looking great. I saw him go up late last night, but I try not to say anything until you post them (although it's really hard sometimes!). For all the silliness of the later years, there were some real gems in there too. Rampart had a great design that didn't require too much effort to modernize. He has one of those great looks that Hasbro really got right the first time out. Great work.

Now a JHSV with 2 of those Mark V for escort. Now we're talking..
