Any of you guys ever wonder abut the Joes' taste in music?
There are certain obvious ones, of course, explicitly stated in one filecard or other: Rock 'n' Roll (heavy metal/rock), Thunder (heavy metal), Wild Bill (country & western), Budo (heavy metal). I know Hama used to play lead guitar for The Burning Sensations (not the LA-based one-hit wonder from the early days of MTV, but the New York classic rock band of the same name... GI Joe and Transformers colorist also played drums for the Burning Sensations) and the K-otics (where Hama played guitar alongside GI Joe penciler MD Bright on bass and colorist Nel Yomtov on drums) so it's probably a given that most "musical-minded" Joes would be biased towards guitar-centric genres. Always wondered if there were any Joes who were explicitly stated as being into jazz or hip-hop (and no, Roadblock's cartoon persona doesn't count). I think it all depends on what "era" you start the Joes off in. If do like the toyline/marvel and start in Viet Nam, then most of their tastes will run towards that era's music. But start it today. Would Stalker still be a ganglord? Would he be into rap?

That brings up an interesting point.. What "origins" of the Joes would change if started today? Stalker is a big one. He was a Detroit gangbanger and the army changed and molded him into the good man he is today. Now, would that have happened without the crucible of Viet Nam? Would fighting in Iraq or Desert Storm have had the same effect on a young gangleader of today's gangs as opposed to the 70s?
I mean today's gangs are almost like little criminal empires, where back in the 70s it was more about rumbling and protecting your turf. Sure they commited crimes, but on the scale of today?

I like basketball, I just can't stand the NBA.

But hey, at least your city/metropolitan area still has a basketball team. I'm still mourning the loss of the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Seattle Supersonics. There was a time when I would have been all angry and pissed over a statement like that. Sadly, I agree with that assessment now. I used to be a huge NBA fan. Huge. If you think I go into crazy detail with GI Joe, I was similarly obsessed (if not more so) with the NBA. If they had NBA Jeopardy, I would've been at least a two-week returning champion . I was something of an amateur APBRmetrician and a regular poster on a couple of basketball and sports statistics sites. But the way the league's been run the past few years has really soured me to the professional basketball aspect of the game, so much so that I stopped watching NBA games altogether about a year ago (the Seattle Supersonics being "stolen" from the city with the commissioner's consent was the final straw for me). Although I guess in effect, my disillusionment with the NBA led to better things, like re-discovering GI Joe (as well as the simple joys of amateur basketball). |

No jazz really surprises me (especially among the officers), but hip hop had a much more negative stigma back when GI Joe was in it's early run (although Deejay seems to have a preference for hip hop from what I inferred from his filecard). Heavy Duty was a fan of classic music IIRC. Wild Bill was a country music man (no big stretch there).
EDIT: Plus, when it comes to going hard, fast and loudly (also a character trait for many of the guys), heavy metal and hip hop are really the two popular kinds of music you think of. But as I mentioned before, hip hop didn't really see the kind of mainstream acceptance you'd need to be included into a toyline until the mid-90's (about the same time as the original ARAH line's death). I don't know if I'd say hip hop falls into the hard/fast/loud category. Nothing beats good ol' heavy metal for the hard/fast/loud and get the ol' juices pumping. I can see Hawk listening to Jazz when filling out reports, but I think he'd put Anthrax or Metallica in the MOBATs speakers on the battlefield.

Interesting point. I remember watching a documentary a couple of years back about how some LA-area gangs actually encourage their members (the ones who don't have rap sheets that would prevent them from enlisting) to sign up for military service, cause it's a convenient way for them to get professional combat training and experience. Maybe a modern version of Stalker would have signed up with that intent in mind, but ended up getting "converted" once he actually started serving.
I'd heard that about the gangs and having members enlist.

....although for selfish reasons I suggest you continue to avoid the NBA altogether. Last edited by Master Thespian; 06-02-2009 at 11:45 AM.. |

-the sale of the Sonics -the refusal of the commissioners office to do anything about the atrocious officiating situation -the guranteed contracts that cripple teams and don't provide the players incentive to play hard all the time -the "me-first" attitude of the superstars -the horrible coaching -the stupid GMs -the screwed up draft lottery system Amateur and College basketball all the way.
