Yeah the news does tend to blow things way out or proportion. It's like they are out to scare people and use their fears in order to keep them inline.
On Sunday afternoon I was driving down my block when I noticed all of these news vans and trucks surrounding a local catholic prep high school in my town. I had my parents with me so I asked my mother if she knew of any event that was going on there this weekend. I figured it was something big like a city wide sporting event or something. My mother then says to me "didn't you hear that's the school that has the swine flu". So I said..."If you knew that why the hell didn't you tell me". If I knew ahead of time I wouldn't have went that way. I didn't know about this "epidemic" or that it was even in the news, but since every news medium in New York City was there at this high school covering this story I figured that it had to be serious. It turns out that a few of the high school kids spent Spring break down in Mexico and brought it back with them. I'm not going to lose sleep over this thing, but it's funny to see how people go right into panic mode when they don't know any better.

now i gotta go spend some more...I should probably get some Spam too. Seriously though, what the news is trying to do is outvolume itself. If we yell louder about some crisis on our channel then the lemmings will watch us! and we will have to yell this story louder than the last so it gets their attention. In all reality its doing 2 things, creating a state of panic where parents wont let their kids go outside and play because some terrorist is gonna twitter the swine flu up thier asses, and having a Cry Wolf effect on the rest of us. Seriously if Hitler rose from the dead tommorow and unleased a nuclear bomb armed zombie platoon of nazis in pink spaceships there would be those of us who would give less than a shit about it.

I got a kick out of people's stupidity and hysteria today while watching the news.
People actually sick with the flu were going to a pharmacy to buy their medicine. In line at the same pharmacy were people buying masks to protect themselves. Hello your standing in line with a sick person, the mask is no good now you caught the flu because you were too stupid to just stay home. I also found it amazing how stupid the ABC news office is. They were all washing their hands with antibacterial soap. Which is pretty much useless against a virus. |

I limit myself to news from NPR for the most part. (and actually I've really been enjoying the BBC news... They don't do sound bites. They do full stories that actually take time to listen to. But you get multiple perspectives and way more depth than we get here in a regular newscast)

Well you have to ask yourself, when has the media ever downplayed anything?
I have my own thoughts and theories about this new madness, and this is obviously not the place for that kind of talk but lately I've been listening to a radio show who are big on the conspiracies and such and such. Now granted these individuals claim to have a different angle than the shadowy bogeymen out there after spending a couple days listening to the show, I find it hard to tell the difference between the media's fear mongering and their own. I mean even I draw the line after a point. |

People in this country have been programmed to "gotta watch the news". I remember my father every evening "gotta watch the news and see what's going on in the world" even though the news had very little to ssay and he always fell asleep exactly 7 minutes into it, but "gotta watch the news"...
