20% is the standard tip for me. I like my glass filled, and discarded plates removed, other than that I like to be left alone. I personally don't like chatty waiters/waitresses.I don't like to be bothered while I enjoy my meal,as I am generally engaged in a conversation with my wife. Waiters that constantly interrupt my conversation loses tip money. Asking me every ten minutes "is everything o.k?" drives me insane. Ask me once after you serve my meal if I need anything else,or would like any condiments, then once more If everything is ok about ten minutes later, then leave me the fu** alone!!!!!!! And don't make me ask for the check. When you see my napkin on my plate it means I am done, don't make me hawk you down for my check!!!!!!!!

Depends greatly on the service. 10% if a little subpar, 15% if decent, 20% if excellent. If service is really lousy I'll leave a quarter on a note telling them to step up their game.

I live in California. I always leave double whatever the tax was. If the tax was $7 I'll leave $14 for the tip. The sales tax in California is 7.25 percent so that leaves a tip around 14.5% of the total of the bill. I usually round up to the next dollar. Of course if the service was awesome I'll leave more.. or less if it wasn't so good.

i go out to eat, its for something to eat. i don't go to see how well my ass gets kissed. i just want a good meal. to hold waiters/waitresses to these types of tests to see if they earn your measly 4 or 5 dollars? please.
i don't care if the service is that great or not, they always get at least 20% from me. if they go above and beyond, 30% or more. i don't expect anyone to have a perfect day at work, nor do i expect it of myself. but i expect to take my full salary home every week. so do you. this is how they get paid. i've never been a waiter, either. just the decent thing to do. in my opinion |

I'm a hopeless romantic so I always whip up a lottery ticket and promise to split it with the server if I win.

Those Take Out "servers" can kiss my ass. They'll get 10-15% if it's a good night. There's not much "serving" about taking a phone call and then stuffing food in a bag and usually fucking up some part of the order anyway.
Usually they're smart-assed in tone and on the phone anyway when you come to pick it up, and act as if they're waiting on you to get out the door so they can close up or leave. I'm sorry that you got stuck at the takeout booth that night and that other people are usually shitty tippers, but you should treat people fairly no matter what, if you expect anything for a tip. Table servers do a lot of legwork, literally, and make multiple trips, deal with the customer several times, do drink refills, and deserve the 20% tip I usually leave. Takeout lackeys take my order once, do no drink refills, and give me my food. That's overpaying to give them 10-15% if you ask me. I just think restaurants should up the hourly pay for servers, and bill it into the meal cost to snag those cheap bastards weaseling out of things, but what do I know. That could end up totally screwing the server industry. Delivery guys get at least 15-20% of the order cost, if it got there in a reasonable amount of time. If there is a delivery charge already tacked on to the bill, then it's 15% and nothing higher. If that screws the driver, then they shouldn't work for some place that automatically charges for delivery. Not you Rex but its crazy what some of you are saying....."How many times they come to your table".....yall do know that besides taking care of you they have anywhere from 5-10 other tables thinking that they are that servers only table....Even though they just saw that same server come out with a ton of drinks for those other tables.....They also have to run OTHER Servers food/salads/drinks.....have way to much Back of the house Sidework which is slowing them down sometimes....you may need another drink that you had to wait an xtra min. on because the manager is bitching at them for not stocking glasses/butter/making tea/getting more ice.....etc......they arent just waiting on you they have other work (sidework) (Which they are making $2.15) to do at the same time......all the while the mananger is screaming for them to run food and do other crazy stuff...... Everyone should have to serve one year of their life just to know what the hell they go through in one hour..... I manage/serve/bartend and it sucks man...... |

If I'm in the middle of a sentence or conversation and the waitperson pops up out of the blue wanting to quiz me on my meal and interrupts my conversation, that's rude on their part. I've had some chatty cathy sit down in the booth like they knew me and want to stir up a conversation... Which is I guess flirty if you're out with the guys, but I've had them do that with my girlfriend, and a) it's awkward and b) again, kinda rude. I also would like to get checked in on regularly, but the question of "would you like a refill?" when my glass is empty yet I'm still eating is sort of redundant... No, I'd rather choke down the rest of this steak on spit alone. Also, waiting on the bill is obnoxious as hell. If waitstaff will get pissy about people sitting around after the bill is delivered and paid, then I hope they can understand that sitting and waiting for 15 minutes on the bill when we're obviously done eating and ready to go, is just as annoying. |

Haha, yeah, I see both sides though. I agree that they should be helpful, but overly friendly can sometimes be obnoxious.

And also the managers sometimes ask if the server has been there....so if they dont go they could get into a ton of trouble....
