Spent about 5 years in a school that taught both traditional korean ma and then had a seperate mma program. Got to navy blue in traditional and did about 3 years of mma training. Then my daughter born and the school closed so I was out of training for about 2 year until last summer, joined a local gracie school and take bjj which I don't care for much along with mauy thai and boxing

I like bjj, it just depends on how the school trains in it. either gi or no gi. The school I am at is a gi school meaning there is no strking what so ever in the bjj classes and alot of the techiques we are taught rely heavily on the gi itself which is completey worthless outside of the school. I dont care how good you are on your back, if you cant weather strikes while still maintaing control of your opponent, its not going to do you any good. Like I said above, I did a handful of years in a mma school and you started on your feet and fought your way to the ground where there was full contact still. The current bjj class I am in there is no striking what so ever, if you want to punch or kick, you have to take the Mauy Thai class. Now alot of the higher belts in our bjj class will school me in class but once we move to the Mauy Thai, Boxing or just free sparing, its a whole new ball game because alot of the guys are not used to getting hit, I have no problem being stuck in your guard as long as I can swing away on you. |

a note also. The school I train at breaks everything down into seperate class.. you have a Gracie BJJ class, You have a Mauy Thai class, a boxing/sparing class and a very new mma class but its only offered in the afternoon well before I even get off of work.. I was spoiled with my first school because they had several instructors and depending on who showed up for class, we could decide what we wanted to do, either Traditional or MMA but this new school, BBJ is offered every day and all the others are offered only about 2 different times during the week.

I am an Ikkyu in Isshinryu.
Respect to my fellow Bushido in all styles..I have been training on & off the last few years and look forward to my full time return after my back heals. I am very interested in Muay Thai and wish I were healthy enough to train BJJ. |
