I'm surprised how many people thought him being shot in the eye killed him. The character is known for having an eye patch, so seeing him without one and then being shot in the eye should've told people he was going to lose his eye. I know Bumblebee dying in Transformers #1 was unexpected, but not everyone is going to die unexpectedly.
Does that look like someone being shot in the eye? Look at the entry wound on the back of his head. That's brain matter spraying out of the enormous hole where his eye used to be. Baroness shot him point blank in the back of the head with what looks like a Desert Eagle. I have no problem with fake-outs in comics; they've been there since day one. But don't go out of your way to make a scene "graphic!" and "shocking!" when it's only supposed to be a flesh wound. I thought this comic was gonna have actual stakes since they went and killed Dr. Burkhart in the first issue. But if they show people getting killed and they're fine the next issue, it's no different from Sunbow. No real stakes at all. Just a safe, sanitary toy commercial. (J James was spot on in how the issue is basically an ad for the Scrap Iron figure...I was thinking the same thing as I read it!) Oh, and as for Bumblebee, I doubt he's really dead either. He's the second most popular/recognizable character in the franchise. Transformers has always cheated death though, cause they can always just be "repaired" over and over and over. It looks as much like drops of blood as brain matter to me. It is some kind of liquid in a shadow. I interpreted it as a side shot and never thought it was straight through the head. The light on the bridge of the nose tells me it isn't an on center shot.
I think the drawing is just ambiguous, purposefully so as to create tension.

Was very happy to see Scrap Iron drop by. I think we only have one more issue to go, so I hope it is another good one!

Comics are basically soap operas in print format; why so serious?

In issue four he has a little boo-boo on the side of his head. That doesn't line up at all with the panel I posted. Dude had his fucking head blown wide open. Don't know why they felt compelled to draw it that way, but they did.
Anyway, it's just a comic book and hardly worth arguing this much over. I get what they were going for. They established that Baroness is responsible for the loss of Bludd's eye. They should have just shown that instead of going for the silhouette. I'm not a gun guy, but I'm sure there are people here that can explain what happens when you shoot someone in the back of the skull with a Desert Eagle at that kind of range, especially if you're using hollow points. I'll just chalk it up to the artist being overzealous in showing gore/violence and they ended up over-doing it. |

Its not brains, its blood. The bullet might have just scrapped the left side of his face, destroying the eye in the process The panel was perfectly done as it implied any of the 2 scenarios could be possible. Leaves the reader wanting to see if Bludd was indeed killed and buying the next issue. Perfect execution of the comic medium.

Keep in mind he's also missing a chunk of his ear, To me that shows he jerked sideways in surprise just before Baroness fired causing the graze. This is Robert Kirkman's version of GI Joe so it could also be a nod to Carl's eye getting shot out by a grazing skull shot in Walking dead as well.

I think the giant crater coming off the back of his skull shows it wasn't just a graze.
I understand what the intent was; I just think they shouldn't have drawn the entry wound so obvious. It's practically three-dimensional the way it has foreground and background. |
