That's really cool.
Are you in cahoots with Chicken Fried on their Dime Novel Legends line?

Side rant: There are carriage builders who obviously have complete plans somewhere. Some even offer plans for sale but usually they are only "scale drawings" with no measurements at all and usually without detail shots and they want anywhere from $40-$100 for these nerfed reference materials. It seems like everyone who has actual plans is unwilling to share them. One place that cranks these carriages out will only sell the drawings with most of the measurements removed "to simplify the drawing," and they also explicitly tell you that even the drawings have errors -- but they won't tell you what they are. Kind of frustrating. I assume they are trying to avoid competition in the building of full-size coaches. It has to be a pretty niche market. But if that's the case, just don't sell any plans at all. Anyway, no, I have no relationship with CFT other than having purchased some of their figures.

Funny you mentioned the Smithsonian. Years ago in the 90s, my dad went hunting in Montana on a guy's ranch who owned a number of antique covered wagons. Anywho, story was the Smithsonian offered him $1 million dollars for his collection, but he turned them down. Don't know if he had a carriage or not. I'll ask my father if he remembers seeing one. He did give my dad an antique wagon wheel to give my mom.

I want to find something that detailed for a stagecoach, I just haven't been able to come close. Quote:

As for my stagecoach project, I haven't made any moves on my last couple of leads yet, but I'm not totally done with the Smithsonian. I just need to try asking a different department within the organization. I tried direct records access by accession number after looking through document manifests for a few days and the item I requested turned out to be mostly useless and something I had already found via google image searches weeks earlier. I read a 2013 news article online about a guy who made a full scale stagecoach and the article says he bought the plans to do it from the Smithsonian. I figure the drawings I need must be there somewhere, but where? The article has contact information for the man who built the coach, but I located an obituary for the poor guy from 2023 so I can't even try bugging him to see if he can tell me where he found his plans. The Oregon Historical Society has a collection of drawings for scale models, which may have to suffice. But they want about $50 shipped for 4 pages of plans and there are no measurements on them either. Argh!

Mercer Museum in Doylestown, PA might be useful. I haven't been in a few years, but they had a similar looking carriage on display as part of their permanent collection the last time I was there (pic source). Their research library would probably be more responsive than the Smithsonian too. |

Hey, some really nice work in here.

I'm chasing down a possible lead at the New Hampshire Historical Society at the moment but I'll look further into this when I can. If Mercer has drawings in those archives it would be useful.
